I did something really similar last year (London -> Portsmouth -overnight ferry-> Caen -> Toulouse)
I looked into camping etc but in the end, i decided to set daily targets and book rooms in Ibis hotels along the way. It only cost about €350 all in and it took 5 days in total from London to Toulouse.
It was ace.
Practical things btw: take a shit load of your chamois cream of choice (asos for me) and some Sudocrem
