• I've been lurking on another forum and they all seem to rate this guy pretty highly.

  • Do you work at Borough Market?

No. Do they dress like this at Borough Market now? Last time I went I think Rockabilly was in fashion.

Their clothes are affordable, handmade and unfussy. And they've been doing it for a fair old while. But it goes without saying that their approach isn't for everyone.

Boetang is brilliant at what he does and I love his style. But for those of us who don’t suit sharp angles and slick attitude – and when the M&S two-piece feels far too much like uniform for Foxtons estate agents – an Old Town suit fits the bill perfectly. Comfortable, unimposing, beautifully coloured fabrics and with a bit of character - but still smart enough to be taken seriously. It strikes exactly the right balance for me.

  • Speaking of Rockabilly, nice little photo exhibit at the NT at the mo, to accompany this book:

  • the lapels and collars on those jackets are horrid, just sayin

Coming from you it works like opposite ways, makes me actually like it ;P
Also missing some spikes and rubber bits, faded leather, etc... I'd assume, no?

  • What shirts would people recommend? Got a series of interviews coming up that I need to smarten up for. I need to buy 3-4 shirts so don't want to be paying more than £40ish per shirt. I think I want something pretty classic - not too flashy or trendy.

  • made of cotton, oxford spread collar if you have a long face and longer collars if you have a round face, light blue is neutral enough and will stay cleaner and smarter looking for longer. cuffs single or double but long enough to just show out of your jacket. top pocket not essential. elaborate patterns not advisable. collar should be comfortable and not make you constantly want to insert your index finger in a bid to allow yourself to breathe. these are all basic guidelines as i know them. hope they help

  • Thanks CoppiThat. Great advice. Didn't know that about the collars. On the High St who does good shirts? Reiss? Zara?

  • TM Lewin.

more along the lines of some drape, texture or sheer.

  • I've always found COS to do very good shirts, though I did use the m&s made to measure online service once http://www.marksandspencer.com/Made-to-Measure-Shirts-Mens/b/63593031 and was pretty satisfied with that, though you have to know what you want obviously.

  • All the shirts I've had from COS have ripped in the same place, around the elbow/upper arm.

And I'm not exactly a hulk - they just seem to be cut for extremely skinny arms.

Also I've had a few buttons rip around the cloth. In the end when all 3 of them were a bit wrecked I just ripped them all up in a fury and now use them as rags for cleaning for my bike. Bit of a waste.

I'm currently having a couple of shirts made at Timothy Everest - a bit pricey but just to see what it'd be like to see if it's a worthy investment.

The initial fittings were very thorough and the chap (Julian) was very helpful in terms of explaining cut/cuff/collar/button/ and the myriad other stylistic features.

They're ready now apparently but I haven't had time to go and try them on. Turn around of about 3 weeks.

I like the fit of shirts from Uniqlo and they're decent value I reckon.

Also plus one on the M&S made to measure online thing - I'm ordering one from there to compare against the Timothy Everest ones.

  • TM Lewin shirts on one of their 4 for £90/100 deals are the best value on the high street, particularly in the heavier weight 'Luxury' fabrics. I get 20% off M&S via wife but every shirt I ever had from them fell apart so I don't bother with them any more.

  • I've been really happy with a couple of Peter Werth shirts I got from TK Maxx for £20. I got the slim fit, I'm really not that slim but the 16.5 collars I take are always very baggy in regular cut shirts, and the nicely detailed darts in the back make them very flattering.

The gingham one shows the nice detailing, hems and seams squared and in line with the pattern, removable collar stays, and decent metal cufflinks included.

  • New popup shop in Lambs Conduit St. Very nice Northern-made clobber with a military twist.

  • Nice clobber

Uniqlo oxford shirts. £20-25 each in a handful of colours. Pretty good quality and an extremely nice cut (for me anyway).

  •
...bla...bla..bla...Raj fashion...

Just thought I'd update on this, as I've just received mine....

    **full post: **http://www.lfgss.com/post2104278-1014.html

    ....Fitted on 07/03....

....My friend has just bought a Hacket suit. It cost £500 (Super 120) and that includes fitting and alterations. He said the turnaround was 3 days and the service and after care was brilliant. That then makes this seem like less good value.....
My re-fitted suit arrived today (19/05), so I thought I'd update.

Start to finish it's been 10 1/2 weeks (if my maths is correct). Both the jacket and trousers have been altered and my thoughts are still pretty much the same as in the last post.

The only thing is the jacket, could probably do with a very, very slight alteration on the front, but with the 6 week turnaround, and considering the original cost, I'm going to leave it. However, if they were in London and it was done in house, I would definitely have a re-fitting/alterations... which highlights a very good point IMO.

    Final thoughts:

There is no easy definitive answer to whether it's been worth it. It really comes down to you and what you want.

For £400 I have a well made suit that I like, and fits me very well. I wear a suit everyday, and it needs to be smart and conformist. I am not an especially awkward shape, but I am not that tall and have quite a big chest, so custom tailoring is a big plus. For the price I don't think I could have got better.

Where I struggle with this whole process is towards the upper end. There was some lovely brown Valentino fabric on the table at my second fit, and the guy said it would have been ~£800. At the time, I thought, "hummm.... could I justify that for a nice non-work suit...maybe". Now I think probably not. I'm sure it would be good, but at that price there just seem to be too many other options.

One major factor I failed to mention, was payment is in HKD. I don't know what GBP is vs HKD, but as the pound is generally shit at the moment that makes a difference.

Would I do it again? Maybe. I know it sounds like a small amount, but if I'd paid £350, I wouldn't think twice. For £400... I'd check out the Hackett ones for £500 and then decide.

NB. I should also add that the comms, and general service was always good and the trousers are my nicer than any I've had before.

  • Oh do fuck off!

One of the worst brands on the market, fronted by the biggest tit in 'music' asks his equally badly dressed mate to 'design' a collection!

  • Watch every bone'ead up and down the country buy into it

  • Hey guys, I need some advice.
I've been invited to a fund raising event for my school at buckingham palace, any thought on what I should wear?

I have a black hat with silver netting and flower and teal shoes, but the middle bit needs some work.

Er, if anyone is genuinly interested in giving me a hand I can post photos of what I'm thinking of wearing...

  • I have a black hat with silver netting

    Yeah we know

  • I am not an especially awkward shape, but I am not that tall and have quite a big chest.

So you're like ChainBreaker, only bigger?

  • Body shot

    Close up of the hat

  • Wow! Is that really you!?!
