Live rodents can carry parasites as well. I'm by no means an authority, it's more the stupidity of this idea that kids have super strong immune systems and you're a fool if you don't let them play with shit. Kids are actually at risk of more things than adults as they are immunocompromised; according to 5 mins on wikipedia.
