Mailbox have CCTV footage of it, stolen at about 17:10 yesterday. Apparently about the 4th Bike he's stolen from there in the past month. You never no maybe they'll catch him next time and break his hand.

At least CCTV is keeping us safe and upholding our freedoms like it's supposed to. No, wait...
Make a 'bait bike' - suspension seatpost with knitting needle secreted in the suspension part. I knew people who did that in Toronto.

very poor!
How is he stealing them. Bolt cutter, saw....
Stealing to resell or part out? Do pawn shops buy them?

As far as I know, there isn't really a re-sale market in Birmingham. It's just opportunist kids nicking cable-locked bikes and selling them for a tenner to their mates. In 4 years of working in a bike shop and being moaned at by customers, I'm yet to hear of anyone breaking even a basic D lock. It's *always *cable locks.
Stupid Birmingham yoots steal Halfords/Argos bikes wit bad disks an' suspension innit. They don't care if you have an infinitely more valuable Surly, low-pro or vintage road bike, because they are stupid thieving cunts!

A big proportion of birmingham bike thieves are crackheads. Some of them go around with pretty big bolt cutters. I know that Aston and Birmingham uni campuses are big targets. Ive seen peoples bikes wrecked due to thieves attempting to twist the frame around till the d-lock (or railing) snapped. It doesnt usually work, but makes a mess of the bikes.
The resale is indeed poor though. They usually sell em on for £20 or so as quick as they can.

I'm no expert on bolt cutters, but I doubt they'd go through a semi-decent d-lock. In my experience d-locks are usually bent and popped open, but again, you can only do that on cheapish ones and it'll probably damage the bike. There's no way you're going to bend an Evo Mini as it's too small.

The jaws on my bolt cutters that I use to steal bikes doesn't open wide enough to even fit around the shackle of a d-lock, never mind being able to cut through one.
I got a builder to try and cut through my Kryptolock with MASSIVE bolt cutters (handles more than a metre long) when someone (possibly) superglued the barrel and that was a massive fail.

Sorry to disapoint dan but chatting to security last night this guy has sprung two D lock (not sure on brands) with a bar over the past 6 months. Generally he favours cables though, wears a long coat with bolt cutters hung inside. Sounds pretty organised appears to know what he wants and what he is doing.
Maybe some new breed from another city... I will however be buying a chunky D lock this weekend! And that knitting needle idea is sick, makes me want to through up thinking about it.

Haven't had a chance yet but will put the pic around ASAP.

Most D locks can be popped with a car jack. Small car jacks aren't too bad to carry around either. Really simple.

Did you get a description of the guy? These 2 were suspected of nicking a bike in Stourbridge and look like they know what they are doing...

Do you want my Kryptonite New York? I think I've only used it for 3 months during Summer (2008 or thereabouts) -

Everyone knows you can open them with a peacock feather or something (for DWS)

Aaargh! Don't bring your birminghamcyclist.com comments over here!

Do you think it is wise to actually post how to defeat locks on a public forum? Dont do it!!

Cheers but I have it sorted.
Is it me or does the guy on the left look like N3il?
My geared road bike was stolen today from the mail box ground floor car park, sometime between 08:30 and 18:30.
Dawes Giro 300
Red
Dura Ace Groupset (7400 early 90s)
Rear Mavic rim - anodised blue
Red and Black Fizik Bar tape
As picture below but looking a little less like a mule these days without the rack and panniers. Its not a great bike but it has a special place under my arse so if anyone sees/hears anything please let me know.
Cheers
Dan
