Critical Mass in Birmingham

I'm new to the forum, could someone please explain to me the purpose of a critical mass?

Use google/wiki before asking things on here, otherwise people (not me) will shoot you down!

Basically, we meet, ride around, no leader, no route, asserting ourselves as traffic en mass, the more riders there are then the mass becomes 'critical' ie a big enough group to prevent traffic from breaking us up....

It's a nice paced ride, you meet lots of local cyclists and can have a cheeky beer aferwards.

oh and if you're a policeman, can I reiterate CM is perfectly legal, there is no leader so riders running red lights/messing about on CM are fully responsible for themselves and are not encouraged by other riders.
