  • 12 o clock start again tomorrow? Weather's looking fine for May Day polo. Full morris dancing regalia and erecting a may pole on the centre spot are a must for this season's polo afficionado.

  • Early start tomorrow? 11?

  • I'll be there at 12 with bells and whistles.

  • Gulp Just registered Daft Punks for the London Open at the end of July and paid the £30 'donation'. Who's with me? Not really sure how this all works, but I'm guessing it's going to prove pretty popular so just thought I'd try a bags a place nice and early. Man/mouse/fool?

  • What's Lyam's forum name? wanna PM him

  • He's hardly ever on here, Woody. I'll PM you his mobile. Chris.

  • Lol, I've got one of these, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bauer-1500-Ice-Inline-Hockey-Helmet-Combo-/160497722804?pt=UK_Protective_Equipment&var=&hash=item6b1adaf9ae

OMG you guys play so hard you need these?!?!? WHOAH....
Us Welsh boys better find some protection for Saturday. ;)
Phone conversation goes: "Hello, is that UnderArmour? You may just be able to save my life"

  • I caught a mallet to the face just 2 weeks ago and now rock a full ice-hockey helmet/face mask too. It attracts some derision from others but y'know, I never want another black eye like that. It was bloody painful!

  • I've already made you bleed once Jeff...

  • i haz some cricket gloves, which ppl can borrow for le tourney etc.

    2 r/h
    3 l/h

    can bring tomorrow.

  • Dibs a l/h

  • Has anyone got joshiboy's number? I needz it. ta.

Who's getting the cable ties for the wood attaching?

  • What time are we meeting at Preston Park today? 3ish?

  • I am at work until 6. I'm not planning on playing today but it would be nice to have one final meeting before the weekend.

  • I'll be down at about 5. I'm meant to be resting my wrist so will only play to make up numbers.

We definitely need to meet afterward to discuss the weekend. Can people try and make it for 6 or 7 until at least 8. I'm kind of spazzing out and it would be nice to share the burden a bit.

  • Spaz.

  • Advice please. Following my fairly disastrous fortnight of wheel destroying, I might of mentioned I'm hoping the birthday fairy will remember to get me a set of 48 spoke Chukkers for my 21st in a couple of weeks. Found some in the states at a fairly reasonable price (compared to Brick Lane Bikes anyway).

My question is: Which spoke pattern for the front is best/strongest? Their 'track' radial looks real pretty but is it up to polo? Or should I just stick with the 'polo wheelset' which is laced more conventionally?

(Thanks again for the loaner, Danny.)

  • I always thought radial was stronger? but my knwoledge isnt that good.
Be careful importing from the states, could get hti with a massive tax bill, higher than the BLB hiopster tax

  • Since the spokes are directly in line with the main force vectors that shape the wheel, a radially laced wheel is stiffer and has greater lateral strength than any cross pattern. First off, the spokes are not bent by any spoke they touch, since they don't touch any. When two spokes cross and give each other a slight bend, it results in a situation where the spoke with the greatest tension will be straighter than the spoke with the least tension. When a shock stress affects these spokes, the spoke that recieves the greater ammount of stress will try to straighten out, the other will bend more. This slight flexing of the spoke does ammount to an increase in the distance from the hub to the rim on the section of the rim that is anchored by that spoke. This also absorbs some of the shock, thereby 'softening' the ride of the wheel. Stresses cannot lengthen a radial spoke like this because it is already as straight as it can be. Since the radial spoke doesn't have the slight bend it can't mechanically absorb any of the shock or stress.

Secondly, in regards to lateral strength, a radial spoke is anchored at the hub as close as it can to where it anchors on the rim (the spoke is as short as it can be). This results in the angle of the spoke at the rim being as large as it can be. The greater this angle the greater the lateral strength. A small ammount can make a big difference. More discussion of these concepts is given on the TRIG page.

  • You could email them, and ask them to mark it down as a gift/mark down the value, to try to stop import tax.
That shop sell them on ebay as well, with a BIN and best offer option, you could try making a lower offer and see if it's accepted.
With the dollar so week, buying from America is pretty tempting!

  • Feel free to read Sheldon Brown on the matter too - http://www.sheldonbrown.com/wheelbuild.html#radial

Liam and I think that there's no way that radial lacing is as strong laterally as 2 or 3 cross. I played on a radially laced rim when I started and some spokes pulled out of the hub, deforming the spoke holes or outright breaking them. When the spokes cross they spread the load out amongst themselves much better than radially and so could take knocks and general polo behaviour better.

Also, remember those Chukkers are gonna be damn heavy, but probably pretty much indestrucible in the 48h flavour! Those sets on the page are fixed/fixed too, buy the rims and Liam will build them with hubs of your choice too...

Yeah, I know, I didn't write that disclaimer yet!

  • Radial has greater strength in a vertical force capacity. For polo the emphasis is on horizontal impacts not vertical. In this case the more crossed and amount of spokes the better and, 3 cross or even 4 cross will help as it gives a stronger horizontal rigidity, less likely to buckle from side impacts. 48 spoke on a 700c wheel should be good...just keep the spokes tensioned! At the end of the day the best thing to ride would be 20 inch 48 spoke wheel on deep rims with a fat tyre!

eggpie also had some 48h rims from memory.
Just in case the US ones are too dear etc.

  • was riding "snowflake" back in the day. Light and strong, BUT... for polo that leaves more space between the spokes for the ball to pass through and when a spoke goes OMG does the wheel go suddenly OVAL!! Light though. I love the 20", 48 spoke fatboy idea!! :):)

  • I've already made you bleed once Jeff...

LOL. Thats just the kind of comment I need on't interwebs...

catch you Sat, just sorting route from Wales. Is the M4/M25/pass Gatwick route best on Sat am you guys reckon?!? Trying to get our flight time down to a minimum.
