SR Apex crankset?

Posted on
  • Righto, I have this old road(?) square taper crankset and I'd like to put it to use.

My research of the transmission datbase suggests that the Shimano UN54 BB is the puppy to get for this particular crankset.

    "SR Apex 165 (118bcd) + Shimano UN54/115mm + System Ex (Condor) + Dura-Ace = cold blow"

All I know is that I need a 42mm chainline at the back. How the chuff do I know:

    1. Whether this the right BB? Does anyone else have this crankset? and;
    2. Which length axle to get?

Any help gratefully received, Ved x

  • 107 mm axle for 42 mm chainline, assuming it is JIS not ISO.

  • Assuming what is JIS Andy?

Pretty sure crankset is "made in Japan" and BB should be JIS, no?

  • Assuming the taper on the cranks is JIS. If made in Japan it is very likely to be, so the Shimano UN54 with 107 mm axle should give you a 42 mm chainline. I've Stronglight cranks with JIS taper and have that BB installed to give me a 42 mm chainline. If you can, track down the UN72 bb, it's much better having steel cups.

  • Thanks Andy, I'll have a search around.

  • I think I have a UN54 English threaded (assuming it's for the Raleigh?) bb at home that you're welcome to borrow to try out before you part with your hard earned. Let me know.

  • Legend! Pm a'comin'.

  • hi Zed, excuse me digging up old thread -- did that 107 BB work out for you?

I have some sr apex 165s, 144bcd, road double, want to use outer ring- not much info about them.

  • you'll probably have to use the inner ring. road double cranksets don't aren't usually built to be pulled in to a 42mm chainline on the outer ring so will bottom out on any bb that's short enough to give that.

  • Nope, I ended up using some Record cranks! I've given up on these, probably will be up for sale.

  • Hello hello

I got some sr apex cranks that I'd like to use for single speed fixed gear and I was wondering if they are sufficient or even strong enough. They are the type where the crank arm is pressed onto the outer chainring (not bolted) I read somewhere that it is more suitable to use the bolted chain ring but im just enquiring whether these can be used safely for fixed geared bikes for the time being.

The cranks are a bit like this one, how ever I won't be using the inside chainring

  • 3 months, 16 days, 4 hours and 22 minutes.

  • Not farmiliar with this type of fixing. If you already own this chainset, use it, if not, steer clear!

  • Or 90 hours of actual riding. If your not fat and don't skid, as your name suggests.
