Fix up or new bike

  • I've had my Peason Touche for coming up to 3 years and it's starting to show its age. I've ridden to work 5 days a week in Manchester including all the way through Winter. Recently I've realised i've probably ridden it into the groud.

It needs a new front wheel, probably a new chain, front and rear sproket and what ever else and as i'm shit with a a spanner I'll take it to someone in Manchester to service and sought out.

If it comes up to £150-200 quid including labour i'm thinking it might be worth Just getting a new bike instead.

As i bought it through the bike to work scheme i never paid the full whack any how.

So is it worth fixing or should i look to get a new bike.

The paint work is still ok so it may be worth keeping.

    regards.

  • Pick up a new wheel and a few tools and give it a go yourself. Tools pay for themselves, and you'll get a lot of chest-beating satisfaction.

  • Fix it! Even a new bike needs running repairs.

  • Yeah I'm no mechanic but surely 3 years of hard work/shit weather isn't going to fuck up a ss/fixed that badly? Hubs/chain/sprocket/brakes (if used) and wheel trueing if necessary and it'll be back on form.

Hopefully it just needs a tighten here and an adjust there. I've love a new bike but can't really afford one at the moment. If it needs a load of stuff though it might tip me over the edge (to a new bike) .

  • To be fair whenever I walk into a decent shop and look around I start drooling looking at all the pristine bikes on display, but then I guess that goes for most people who would post on a cycling forum! Sounds like you've got a good bike though, and you'd have to drop a lot of cash to improve it if you were buying *brand *new.

  • yeah thats true. Though i'd hopefully try the cycle to work scheme again. I've heard somewhere it's not as kind these days though. I've had my eye on a dolan pre cursa for a while but might have to wait a bit and save up some cash.

  • New half-decent front wheel - £25-£50 second hand, maybe less...
    Chain - £6-£15
Chainring & sprocket - not much off here in good used cond
True wheels if they need - beers or small coin for someone on the forum

If you like how it rides and can use Google, fix it up!

  • Probably the best way forward Timmy

  • Why not get in touch with some people on the Manc forum, I'm sure there must be some poor students who may know what they're doing, who can sort out your bikes issues for a few cans of red stripe.

You'd be suprised what changing the chain alone can do, keeping that in good condition, limits wear to chainring and sprocket, cleaning and greasing improve longevity. If your front wheel feels grainy, might just need re-packing with plenty of grease.

No point shelling out, if the bike feels right, can't really afford new.

  • Definitely fix up. If you take an old road bike, wack new wheels, tyres, chain and clean the difference is amazing.

If the bike is as tatty as you say, you'll prolly only get £140-200 for it, plus £150 = a budget of £350 max. What were you thinking of buying for that?

If you like the bike and the ride stay with it. Is there anything in particular you can feel as being wrong?

    Here's a new front wheel for £40

Or an open sport laced to an on-one hub.

My list of upgrades would be:

    Front Wheel + new tyres
Chainring and cog (TA do good chainrings at a pricepoint)
    Chain (KMC)
Brake pads (Fibrax are cheap but good)

None of that requires a shop. Just allen keys, greese, the search function here and/or youtube. And even if you went a bit wild I think £165 would be your top wack.

After that, maybe replace the brake cables, check the crankset + BB and headset.

All bikes wear out and age.

  • well its not as bad as i thought, there's life still left in the old dog yet. New chain and sprocket needed, rear hub needs re packing and a few bits here and there.

I reckon this time i need to clean the chain a bit more, especially in winter. With the weather in Manc you clean it one day then it rains and the rods are full of that black crud that it pics but again.

    Thanks for the advice
