Sram chain compatibility?

Is a sram chain compatible with an 1994 ultegra 6700 9 speed set up as i'm getting a bit of chain rub on the big ring when in 8/9 gear.
I have a spare hg53 chain would this be better suited?
Just checked the chain,looks like its a sram pc89r by the way.

The PC89r is a 9spd chain so there should be no problems.

By "chain rub when in 8/9 gear" do you mean it's rubbing on the inner edge of the chainring? Some rubbing is to be expected as it's not the perfect chain line.

Yes,rubbing on the inner edge.I may try a 10 speed chain to try and rectify.

A ten speed chain will be too narrow.

What ring are you in at the front when "in 8/9 gear", and which end of the cassette are you starting counting from?

8/9 being the smaller sprockets I'd assume. As Dammit says a 10spd chain wouldn't fit onto the sprockets

A 10sp chain won't make a difference. Take a look at your front derailleur's limit screws.

It's interesting- other people would count from the smaller sprockets, so the OP might be in (for example) 52 front/28 rear, and because they are running right across the block the chain is scraping the mech cage.

Or, indeed, vice versa, more tension on large/large though.

I'm assuming it because of where the chainrings are wearing. Wear on what I'd say the 'inside' of the chainring would be caused by the chain being over to the right.

Gary1, is the chain rubbing when the chain is in the big ring? Or is it rubbing on the big ring when the chain is in the little ring?
