8/9 being the smaller sprockets I'd assume. As Dammit says a 10spd chain wouldn't fit onto the sprockets
It's interesting- other people would count from the smaller sprockets, so the OP might be in (for example) 52 front/28 rear, and because they are running right across the block the chain is scraping the mech cage.
Or, indeed, vice versa, more tension on large/large though.
