  • For fuck's sake, stop fucking moaning.

  • A dope show of this dimensions gets paid by itself I reckon, with all the royalty and shits the money are taken out from the pockets of the peasants, so no waste:)

  • Actually quite enjoyed the wedding.

    But then I am American.

  • For fuck's sake, stop fucking moaning.

Like I have already said don't work yourself up, I am just moaning, ignore the thread if it troubles you to the extent where you yourself have to moan about someone else's views.

  • For fuck's sake, stop fucking moaning.

What are you moaning about? let them vent spleen, it's cathartic.

  • Now if that old witch Thatcher had karked it today then I would have had me own little street party but failing that it was a lovely time for riding instead of watching a load of slack jawed inbreds playing dress-ups on the back of my taxes

Probably true, the extra tourism alone probably puts more into the economy than is taken out by staging the event.

  • Tourists don't just come here because we've got a Monarchy, they come for Jack the Ripper too...

  • Wasn't Jack the Ripper part of the Monarchy?

  • Help! is a member of the moanarchy.

  • Wasn't Jack the Ripper part of the Monarchy?

    Ok then, Sherlock Holmes!

  • Actually I may be linked to Jack the Ripper ( one of the suspects anyway )

Anyway Im on my 3rd glass of Bubbly, and havent stopped smiling all day ! :)

    I love Weddings and Love..........

  • Sherlock Holmes was my great grandfather.

  • No really; I am pretty much linked to Francis Thompson who was a suspect.

  • Probably true, the extra tourism alone probably puts more into the economy than is taken out by staging the event.

Are you going to cite the PWC report as evidence for this? Are you factoring in the cost of an extra day's holiday.

Has anyone ever produced convincing evidence of the economic value to the country in tourism of having a royal family? Royalists always trot out this argument, but it only ever seems to be backed up with hunches and anecdotal evidence. Happy to be corrected, unless it's with the British Tourist Authority's estimates...

  • France seem to do okay on tourism and look what they did to their Royal Family.

  • Greece on the other hand...

  • Every capital city gets visitors, they don't all have some queen in her undies or however the saying goes...

  • Help! is a member of the moanarchy.

    I'm liking your work.

    : )

  • The security operation alone is costing £millions.

    The bank holiday, £Billions.

But anyway, it's not a just a question of economic value, it's a question of the values we want to encourage in our culture. Elitism, snobbery, automatic privilege by birth and dubious genetics doesn't seem to feature on any list of positive social influences I've ever encountered, and would seem to counter any political dogma of the last 50 years, but then I'm poor, and not in-bred, so who gives a fuck, innit.

  • Are you going to cite the PWC report as evidence for this? Are you factoring in the cost of an extra day's holiday.

No, just a casual uninformed observation, I have no clue about the actual figures, all I am saying is that it can't be looked at as simple one way expenditure, there are likely to be returns to, I'd guess (and only guess) that the increased tourism might well bring in a bit.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a shame that we do stuff like this, and the money could be much better spent, but in the grand scheme of things (the national debt) 30 or 60 million (or whatever it is) is a very very small drop in an enormous ocean.

  • and also,

why are Yanks so obsessed with the royals when they're simultaneously so proud of being a republic?

    Yep.

They haven't been a republic for decades as much as they would like to think they are.
