Or take your chain off and do it on a turbo trainer. or do a Rollapaluza? spinnign down a steep hill won't give you a very good test basis.
I had a cadence meter on a PRO computer, did revouts on a turbo on gears and hit 240 then it "blew up" never worked again. I think the magnetic contacts get very wafty at those kind of cadences. Best way is like I said, top speed and know your gearing.
