ok another situation:
imagine ur riding fast by the curb side with a car infront and behind you... with just the width of your bike between the two cars...a curb side obstruction is coming up infront of you AND the gap between the cars is closing- your gonna have to either slow down [fuck that] OR get through the gap QUICK to get to the middle of the road.
i would argue that you couldnt just turn into the gap - but that you'd have to lunge your body weight over to the middle and pull your bike over to meet you - that way it's an f'in quick manouver - it gets you out of trouble - you havent lost speed - and your frickin STOKED!

It's just steering with your hips. Yes, if you do it abruptly enough, you'll probably experience one of Newton's Laws. I don't know which. I'm no physicist, nor astronomer. But, it's the kind of thing that freaks out other road users if you do it habitually.
Smooth lines should make you feel more stoked with yourself in the long run.

i think i know what you mean. whipping your bike about by first moving your weight out of the line of movement, then pulling the bike with your legs and relying on the fact that you're heavier than the bike

BMMF i hear what your saying about the smooth lines - like the pros - but with another description:
say your leaning hard into a corner, but when you're on the exit you almost leave the bike on its line and shift your upper body away from the bike... and then pull the bike to meet you
there's probably no point whatsoever in doing this - just something i notice i have been doing when riding fast recently - and it definitely has something to do with sumo's physics lesson...

any guides or techniques to this?
i mean it's fairly simple..
however....the other day i did that move that's useful when you find yourself between cars on a double lane road and you have to get over to the curb in very limited space whilst moving with the traffic...
you know - where you shift your bike over first and ur torso follows later - like a typewriter...
infact i'm gonna call that the typewriter from now on..
but i digress. - i have seen this technique used in the tour de france when a dude in full green had crashed [maybe] at the top of a mountain - he then had a bloddy fast decent to try and get back to the group. this was a VERY narrow mountain road with rocks pretty much sticking out of the mountain side, looming into the road. this dude was shifting his bike around all over the place - the bike was hardly ever underneath his centre of gravity.
it was awesome to watch.
i've also done it when coming out of seriously tight and fast corners - where you kind of pull the bike off its line to meet your body after its lunged out of the corner...
fuck it. i am just STOKED riding fast these days!
