  • if you're gonna switch you have to be prepared to go back to square 1 and start training from scratch again.

if that sounds like effort, just replace like 4 like.

I reckon in 5 years folks'll be back to what we consider 'normal' trainers as we're conditioned to these from childhood so it's tricky to maintain the effort of changing back to barefoot style, regardless of the reported advantages in doing so.

  • last run of the week, was the worst, lacking in energy, tried to maintain a slower steadier pace, but felt like I was running through treacle. Stopped once because of ongoing ache in calf, but not for long.
Chalk this one up to a bad day at the running office and look forward to next week, when I add on that extra k..

  • So is there anyone here that uses any of these new barefoot running trainers?

My asics are long overdue replacement and I'm not sure what to go for next. Saw a couple of people wearing the vibram shoes when running my last half marathon, and I've read good things about them.

Only thing that currently puts me off, is spending £100 on not much, when you can get some trainers with lots of support for the same price?

Basically you need to change your gait to one with a midfoot strike. Which is claimed to be a more natural way to run. Personally I cant see how running on tarmac is anything other than unnatural by default. As well as the five fingers (which I really like for walking). There a quite a few other options....

Personnally I just go back from a 10km virgin voyage in my Kayano 17's, and they were fantastic. The fit is great, basically forgot all about them. You cant ask for more than that

  • did the Madrid Marathon yesterday, 3hr 50. 1st one ever so I'm pretty pleased. The last 8km was up hill and I could feel myself slowing down, was aiming for 3.45 but checking my lap times on the way in realised I wasn't going to make it as the gradient was adding 40 secs per km on and I just couldn't do any more. Up until that point my 5km's splits were all within 10 seconds of each other I found out afterwards, so all in all i'm well chuffed.

Think I'm going to do another now, but maybe one were i can train in the appropriate climate!

  • ^ cooler than my story.

Missed my first day of running yesterday. Shin splints. Argh! want to run through them, but don't want to force myself to stop running.

  • Just ran my first 5k round the park... like an old lady. 34 minutes....

  • Fair enough. The idea is appropriate running shoes stabilise the gait, and should'nt alter it too much. More of a case of minimising unwanted movements in the gait.

Sore heels could be a sign that your knees are taking a beasting too.

If you have the technique for bare foot running.....

Thanks, but 4mm of coosh aint gonna cut it! Im not that light on my feet.

  • ^Homaphobe.

  • Went for first run in quite a while last night. Have been riding 200-300mi a week recently.

Felt really awful....legs felt like they are quad heavy and fitness is nowhere near as good as I thought. I think my muscles need a few runs to re adapt.

Oh well, won't take long to get back up to scratch.

  • ?

  • Er, I found my first run for a while tough because my legs have adapted to cycling...have also noticed that my cycling fitness is far better than my run fitness. However, I'm not worried as it won't take long to get back on form.

    Sorry, wasn't very clear.

  • 2 days after marathon, feel like i'm being punched in the thighs, everytime I climb a step.

  • im doing my first parkrun on saturday really looking forward to it man.
shud be really gd. looking for a time of 17-20mins :) (an im only 14)

  • New shoes is here!!!

Wooooooo I've never Waite for 4 weeks for anything before, I bought a house in less time!

  • Thanks, but 4mm of coosh aint gonna cut it! Im not that light on my feet.

Cant say i was tempted by them. Those nike free's are gimmick-tastic though.

  • Can't wait for tomorrow morning; running from port Isaac to tintagel, 10.1 miles of empty Coastal path!

  • That was ace... Will upload stats later

  • Just did 5k in the sticks of Sweden, nothing but forests, fields and sea. Awesomes

  • Grr gamin doesn't seem to be working v well, but I saw 1 person or 2 hours! I like running in the city but love it in te countryside

  • I've run 15km at my parents place in the last two days. They live in the country. I literally did not see one person during those 15k. Plenty of deer. Plenty of rabbits. No people. Just pine trees and gorse bushes.

Back to OKR next week though :)

  • I love disapearing into the mountains, not to see another person untill I get home. Its a big part of why i run.

  • For that reason I love the rain in England- everyone is indoors and its you, your footsteps and your heartbeat. No music. Just the gentle rhythm of rubber on gravel, and the drip of droplets mingling with the beads of sweat and falling all around you.

Or the early morning, when you and a hardcore bunch of rowers are up and the pre-dawn greeting, like joining a secret club, the raised eyebrow in mutual appreciation of each other's dedication to allowing a bit of time for yourself.

Rain in April is the best, just after a baking, humid day and the thunderclouds set in and the wind picks up and London crawls to an anticipatory halt, as people prepare to rush to any shelter and a fumbling for umbrellas, like gas masks in the trenches. And then the first soothing drop and the whole ground seems appreciative. And finally, the smell post rain, of cleanliness.

I sort of love running, and sort of hate it.
I love waxing lyrical, especially when its rubbish.

  • The main reason I like running in the rain is that all the stray dogs go and find somewhere to hide and all the assholes that walk their dogs through my neighbourhood without leads are inside.
That and getting covered in mud and not caring.

Went out last night for the first time in ages, no watch, no map. Really enjoyed running for runnings sake, not aiming for any time or training goal. The only problem was the dogs as usual.

Might start carrying a stick, or start taking gels as fuel intead of bacon.

  • just had to give up after 3.5k of 5... too warm and not used to run again after 3 days rather than a week, felt shit straight away... kept thinking about [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Crowhurst"]Donald Crowhurst[/ame] for some reason, perhaps a tell tale sign?

  • Dug my running watch out this morning. Has'nt worked for a couple years despite a battery change. Had a fiddle with it, put a new battery in, and its working perfectly again. Result.

    Serious half-marathon training is on!

This was only meant to be a fun half to get me running in a more focused manner. But who am I kidding. The previous smallfurry PB can start counting its days. Part of me hopes rugby is cancelled tonight, so I can run the course.
