Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on with my body to be honest.
My physio says I have SI join dysfunction bought on by a major muscle imbalance in my body. She has given me loads of stretching and strengthening exercises to do, but it's still bad. Some days I can barely make it home after work.
Mike, that's what I've had for about thirteen years, although I only got a proper diagnosis in 2006. I remember feeling exactly like you describe and being at a complete loss as to what the problem was.
I'm not sure what it was caused by in my case, although a muscle imbalance wouldn't surprise me. I have it on the right side--is yours left or right? As I had no idea what was going on, I compensated for it for years, which in time led to considerable knee problems on the same side, so make sure you don't ride too hard on that knee.
As I've mentioned loads of times before, yoga for cyclists really helped me--reducing imbalances is of course one of the main themes of yoga.

Good luck with getting through it.
