Personally, I can't push a big gear. Just not strong enough. I am happy spinning.
On the Alfine I am running 44/20 now which is super spinny in the lowest gear but as I am doing a lot of footpaths and cycle tracks it works out fine. Track bike is 49/19, so again not exacly a massive gear.
Steve - the Goldtech chainrings are decent if you are ordering a smaller ring. Not the cheapest but nice and thick and they should last as you can turn them round and use both sides. Cheaper just to by a big cog for the rear though.
