  • Horrendous cyclist pedestrian collision at about 7.45 at the start of Lower Road right next to Surrey Quays station. Roadie cyclist was doing about 20mph ( I was 25m behind) and was passing through green traffic light. A lady just stepped out right in front of him without looking right. There was no way he could have avoided her. Proper full on collision with bike ending up flipping and landing a fair way away. I really thought oh shit, this is a baaaaad one and jumped off my bike expecting to find broken bones at least. Well, based on previous experience of similar crashes anyway.

A lady passer by went to the ped and I went to check out the cyclist. Both were really shaken up and took a good two or three minutes of checking themselves out before knowing that they were uninjured. The cyclists clothing saved him from road rash I think as he slid a long way on the road. I saw the crash really well and know that he did not hit his head.

Lady had a small graze to her elbow and a bruise on her knee...gave her a sterile swab from my first aid kit and talked with her until she stopped crying out of the sheer surprise of what just happened.

What was really nice was that she immediately said that she didn't look and had no idea he was there and that she was sorry...I was half expecting male cyclist to have a go at her but we all stayed calm and there was no finger pointing at all. They also both thanked me which I wasn't expecting as that should be the last thing on your mind when you're shaken up.

She tootled off to the cafe on the corner for a cup of tea to make sure she was ok before going on to work. He spent a few more minutes getting his head straight and checking his bike (it was fine) before continuing on his journey.

I can't tell you how nasty it looked...I was a little shaken up just by seeing it. Turned out well though. Be careful folks...its silly season out there.
