Lorry driver: cyclists please use cycle lanes.
Presenter reading email: but don't some cycle lanes send cyclists into your blind spots?
Lorry driver: yes that is a problem. -

Great that this is getting prime coverage!

Some painfully daft ideas, but also hitting a lot of good points.

'Let's keep bikes off the roads and mix cyclists and pedestrians instead' guy has no idea.

lol at the guy who was just annoyed that his son's car got written off in a collision with a cyclist. What a fuckin' prick.
As far as I can see the main problem is that motorists on the whole just do not acknowledge cyclists as having a legitimate right to use the roads.

The callers on that program need to understand that anicdote is not evidence. I stop listening when I hear: "last week I was driving and...."

The iplayer link is now working and i'm listening to the beginning of the program. Lol at first calller: "errr, yes, yes it would. errr."

Vox pop hardly ever garners sensible contributions, there was an awful lot of victim-blaming there, it would have been nice if someone calmly pointed out that cyclists really do NOT want to collide with anything else because it bloody hurts, and in most cyclist/vehicle collisions the driver is the party at fault. A lot of the listener contributions were just prejudiced people venting.
-

I was quite impressed with how many sensible people they found to dilute the venting idiots.

Kate Cairns was brilliant, it developed into a much more sensible discussion. It seems to be the silly season for stories about cyclists in the media, I don't know if the debate's getting a bit less frothy and supportive of cyclists.
And I reckon the chap who reckoned his son's £3k car was written off by a cyclist is talking a load of old trousers. I may be wrong but that seems pretty unlikely to me. Anecdote anyway, so irrelevant, my vox pop would be "I saw a driver punching a kitten and don't forget it was a driver that killed Diana."
