  • watched Blue Valentine last night. not really the light hearted date movie i thought it would be.

  • Did you like it though?

  • for a film with no demonstrable plot it was a solid 7 outa ten. uncomfortable to watch at times, felt a bit voyeuristic bearing in mind the over realised dialogue and cinematography - refreshing alternative to the usual rom - com shite tho.

  • Finally watched The Lovely Bones last night. Actually enjoyed it - far from perfect - but thoroughly watchable. Now posted back to LoveFilm and awaiting my next delivery.

Does anyone use Empire's rental scheme? Thinking of sacking off Love Film in favour of it - simply for brand loyalty (have a copy of every issue of empire since October 2003)

  • Everything about Heat is incredibly satisfying. Nobody shoots LA quite like Mann does. The early morning hour is captured beautifully on more than one occasion. ...

The LA scenery shots in Collateral are pretty good too.

Source Code? I just can't get over Jake Gylenhaal being such a shit wooden actor or I might be tempted

    Noooooo, don't do it!

parently the last scene is music by Moby,
gonna have to watch Heat again now.

Moby - God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters

Just watched Last Three Days. I actually enjoyed it.

Yes, I really like that film too. Been put of Crowe films of late since they just seem to 'Gladiator' but set in a different time and place. But this was fresh, and well executed and a decent situational story too. Plus I quite like Elizabeth Banks.

  • I thought it started very well but declined more and more, and the ending was shite, in my opinion, which is often a little mis-guided

    Ok.
Oh, and Phil, it really isn't your cuppa.

    Watched this on release.

Great film, if not a little rambling in direction at times. Love the Gosling. Best actor of his generation. If in doubt, watch Half Nelson.

gonna have to watch Heat again now.

    Uh-oh... what have I started.
Any ideas what this is in reference to?

Same geezer wot is behind va lense innit.

  • Mrs Glover has got John Landis in the office today and he's apparently a human whirlwind of shouting and coffee.

  • Ok.
Oh, and Phil, it really isn't your cuppa.

hmm.. if it isn't would you say that's probably a result of it coming out of Hollywood..?

  • strokes chin
    Hmmmm...quite possibly, probably.

  • @Shoots "Any ideas what this is in reference to?"

could it be the colonies of 'Starship Troopers '?
or theres that other sci fi one with the people who arent people but think they are or something.?

I just watched this which was on here for some reason.

words still rolling around my head, a good reading of Howl IMO,
I like it when you come out of films and want to just be in that train of thought, swimming in the images and language you just saw, no need for speech.

    It's from 'Aliens' I believe.

Oh, do you like my bike BTW? cough

  • Let me know what you think.
I would also seriously recommend LA Plays Itself, Daisies, Mutant Girl Squad, Lift by Marc Isaacs, Piercing I and a website called Kino 10 which has great shorts.

Had a lot of time for it, was quite like watching a Herzog film, although I'm not sure how much good will have come from the making of the film for Mark, I can't imagine it gained any closure. Who knows?!
Thats an impressive list, I will endeavour to push through them. Although tonight I'm gonna watch little dieter needs to fly.

  • isn't Off world Colonies from that epic Arnie film, the one with the exploding head and dreams and mars being red

    all time classic

  • wow! pifko that looks like the kind of bike people will ride in the future when everyone has grown tired of bikes with minimal transmissions in the outerworld colonies (like Peckham)

  • Im gonna go and stick Mulholland drive on again now- swim in it.

  • ? Never seen it.

  • whats it about?

  • Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father.

    Disturbing.

@ mf - how was the swim? nice n lynchy i trust.

Yeah I agree, I sort of just felt quite worried about him at the end! Also, I was initially suspicious of other people making money from his illness but it all seemed legit.

Sorry, they're just some of the better stuff I've caught at festivals lately and I'll forget if I don't tell people!

I was expected pure indi romantic clichés. In fact I really liked it, quite impressive considering a lot of it was improv and it really got under your skin especially if you'd been in that situation before...I recently had. wahhh. Gosling is a legend and the soundtrack was great - Penny and the Quarters for gods sake!

  • i thought it was all Grizzly Bear?

mrs cf tells me they actually lived together for a year before filming. bloody method actors.

  • Ok.

    KO.

  • mrs cf tells me they actually lived together for a year before filming. bloody method actors.

    Really ?

    Actually pretty close...

Before filming the marriage dissolution between the main characters, Gosling and Williams prepared by renting a home, bringing their own clothing and belongings, buying groceries with a budget based on their characters' incomes, filming home movies and taking a family portrait at a local Sears with the actress who played their daughter, and staging out arguments.[3][5] Cianfrance visited the actors and assisted them in building tension while remaining in character: "One night he told Gosling to go into Williams' bedroom and try to make love to her. Gosling, soundly rejected, ended up sleeping on the couch."[5]

  • So impressive.

Grizzly Bear picked it all with the help of Gosling I think? His vocals are all genuine, he has a band called Dead Mans Bones which my best friend overplays all the time!

Do NOT listen to the terrible film versions of this, sounds bad but this is the original:

"What is remarkably interesting about this lone track is that the archival label Numero Group (a label that researches, recovers, re-masters, and repackages obscure pop gems that are no longer distributed) discovered the rehearsal tape, labeled only “Penny & The Quarters,” at an estate sale in Columbus, Ohio. Although the origin of where this song came from is unknown to the majority, this song can be played at your finest times or your worst times, and should never to be forgotten."*
