• I was mildly annoyed (enough to commit this to the internet at least and bore you senseless) by a geared rider this morning who insisted on 'racing' me.

I've just massively reduced my GI so I'm spinning like a madman at the moment (I had sore knees) so much so I can only get to about 45kmph before I spin out whereas with the previous GI I could do that easily.

Anywway cycling to work this mornign I went past geared chap who then responds in the backkground with a clunking of gears and an effort to sit on my wheel. This goes on for some time until he sees his opportunity and decides to 'fly' by me (I say fly by I was probaly only doing 35kmph max and he was probably doign 40). Of course his max effort lasted for about 50 yards at which point he slows down and I pass him again (as I maintained the same speed). This went on for the next 5 miles or so until the effort of doing 35/40 kmph broke him and he dropped off to a crawl.

I'm all for trying to keep up with a faster rider - as it's fun, pushes you and is a bit of extra exercise but I just think the constant stop start of nodder racing is pointless. That and you look like a melt when you eventually bonk, especially when the rider you were racing is neither racing nor putting much effort into it.

The only good thing is it's reminded me how fun it is to spin rather than mash a bigger gear.
