Custom Spokes

Coming home from work I here a tinkling from the rear wheel (but there is no brake rub so think that the noise may just be my keys etc) get home, look at my Easton Velomax 2007 circuit and realise one spoke is broken and another is damaged. However. The wheels use specific double threaded spokes (which thread both into the hub and conventional nipple/rim) a quick email to eastons uk distributor brings zero joy. Easton US do still have them but at a price and at a wait. I do some googling and find that velomax "designed" the hubs so that traditional spokes could be adapted to fit.

After more trawling I found a small independant which had the capability to produce custom spokes to order. Got the old online pdf manual, got the specs and sent an email to Graham at Tiller Cycles.

After a brief email exchange he completed a custom order for me 5 spokes cut to size with rolled threads of the required depth etc. We talked through a range of DT swiss spokes for the job (went for champion in the end) All for less than £6 including postage! And the turn around was about 2 days! Saved my bacon and my lovely wheel (once I manage to coax the sheared spoke out). Cant thank him enough.

Also on a side note I asked for 5 black nipples and he said he would pop some old ones in for free. When I recieved the spokes there was a letter saying the old ones were the wrong tpi and he would put some new ones in the post to me free of charge! Apparently he gets all sorts of wierd and wonderful orders and this is a service he is developing! Oh and I am not on commision. I just believe that those who offer an exceptional service deserve to have their praises sung!

  • That's pretty tidy. Personally I would have got more than 5 done.

It's always annoying when companies make non standard parts but then fail to follow up with easily available spares

  • awesome. (off to check my Easton's for spoke type)

I do feel that I should have maybe gone for more and/or ordered drive side lengths etc but not too worried about doing that in the future If needs be
