Do Brixton Cycles take part in the venerable cycle to work scheme? I'm guessing not...
Yes they do (or did last time I bought a bike). The only thing is they add on the admin charge (about £70 or so) which is more expensive than another shop (who are big enough to absorb the cost) however they offer great service and are generally brilliant.
I got my steamroller there (a 'custom' build) through the Cyclee Scheme and it was very reasonable indeed.
If you are looking for cheaper (as someone was further up the thread) the Gary Fisher fixed bike looked like (and probably is) the same frame as the Surly but a rubbish colour. Brixton also used to sell that too (It's ages since I've been in as since I started on my Surly hardly anythign has gone wrong - cf to my geared bike).

Despite having similar track end, the Gary Fisher is the same as the old LeMond Fillmore, not the Surly.

I've read that ten times Ed, and I still don't understand it.

makes perfect sense.

Not for a second saying you are wrong (I wouldn't have a clue either way) but the person who told me this seemed very certain. Could I have misheard (misremembered) and he said it was made in the same factory?

The best example would be looking at the chainstay;
Whether the Surly one have a larger clearance for tyres up to 38c;
It's probably was made in the same factory, but it's not the same bike.

Gary Fisher and Lemond were both brands owned by Trek. Following comments made by Greg Lemond about Lance Armstrong, Trek's current poster boy, and doping, Trek quietly dropped marketing activity of the Lemond brand. Greg Lemond then successfully brought a law suit against them and he know has control of the brand again.
The Trek made Lemond models were rebranded thereafter as Gary Fisher, hence Ed's comment.
Surly are not, to the best of my knowledge, involved with Trek in any way.

Like they did to Klein and are about to do to Gary Fisher? I hate Trek.

Got some bullhorns the other day and a set of carbon forks from a Ridgeback so I'm just 'trying them out' still wearing the cross tyres

I remember that colour now. You just removed the Surly stickers, hence why it looked different to me.

^ balls... i really like that. do i have to spend monies at bobbins now?
-

It doesn't cost much in the first place, I used to have one, it's nice as a novelty but it's not exactly the brightest light out there.
At least you don't have to take it off the bike which is nice.
