Solo polo tour around Europe (interrailing)

Posted on
  • Hi folks

This month i've decided to take off 3 weeks and go on a bit of a mission around Europe visiting various polo locations, getting some games in with well established groups and hopfully meeting some 'up and coming' communities that have popped up on the Leagueofbikepolo.com radar. I plan to do this via an Interrail ticket for three weeks costing 460€, my rough route will be:

    Barcelona > Toulouse/Montpelier/Marsielle > Turin > Rome > Budapest > Poland (Warsaw and Krakow)> Germany > Belgium > Geneva > Brighton for the tournament on 7th May.

It's a lot to cover in just 3 weeks and i'll admit to not organising any of it but I figured I've got the first week covered at least and can make up the rest as I go along. My main reason for making a thread about this is to find out peoples experiences with interrailing with a bike? Of course it's down to each countries operator whether they accept bikes but I would like to hear of any experiences good or bad. I plan to take some sort of basic bag so that the Pompetamine cab be carried on as large hand luggage in the event of complication or prohibitive cost in taking a bike.

Also any contacts that might come in useful, places to stay etc.

    Rich (bristol)

  • Rich, as far as Marseille is concerned, they don't play polo over there anymore.
But Toulouse and Montpellier are 100% worth the trip. Lot of good polo going on in both cities, so I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun.

    Edouard

  • hey rich ,
I was just in italy playing polo and they told me to only get a local train cause they allowed bikes whereas the bigger TGV style intercity ones didnt (prob allow bike bags though). This was in the Veneto though so dunno if that applies to all of italy or not

  • Great Edouard, any contact details you could PM me?

Ben, thanks for the info. Where did you go in Italy? Any contacts or other info that might be useful. Did you go to Rome?

  • Nah i didnt go to rome, i was in Vicenza, they play on wednesdays as far as i know but i can send you some peoples contacts if you want, you on facebook?

  • You should stop in Rouen just before Brighton and we'll take the ferry together to go to Brighton's tourney.

  • rome has a good court and a good polo crowd
