  • Yes. Not sure how a person's status could ever change from 'fatal' but good new nonetheless.

  • I hope this guy is ok.
    One report,
    http://simonlamrock.com/2011/03/cyclists-bicycle-crushed/
says the helicopter came and then he went by ambulance to UCLHopsital, about 200 metres away.
The main benefit of the helicopter is to get two A&E specialists and equipment to the casualty very quickly. If there is a good A&E hospital nearby going by ambulance is less risky than having to secure the patient for a helicopter ride.

  • I'm a doctor and had just crossed the road when I heard the screaming. It appeared like he got sideswipped by a large blue (?garbage) truck. The chap had his helmet on and was concious and speaking at the time..obviously in shock. No obvious bleeding but didn't like the look of his legs and couldn't tell if he had intenal injuries. Stayed with him and told him he was going to be fine till the cops arrived and moved on as there was nothing I could do. Credit to the cops who arrived within a minute. Logged on just to see if there was anymore information on the chap..sincerely hope the 'fatal' message above was wrong.

  • Moncho: I think I'll be speaking for everyone when I say thanks for doing what you could. You'll probably want to make yourself known as a witness, even if you didn't see the accident itself, since you were first on the scene.

  • Jeez, feel sick reading this. (Like all the other rider down thread too)
I do hope the rider recovers from this.

There appears to be quite a few witnesses on this thread, more than usual.
This i guess can only be a good thing, but more importantly how amazing you all were in helping and coming forward. Please as others have suggested get in touch with the police if you haven't already. So so so important.

Peace to you all, fingers crossed for the rider.

  • I live in Oxford and was on my way to a meeting..didn't see the incident happen, but certainly saw the truck pull over to the side. Not sure what I'd be able to add but happy to if it helps...can't see anything on the met police website to guide me on how to?
To be honest, when I moved away I thought the chap was going to make it. Praying he did.

  • Just give 'em a bell on 0300 123 1212 and let them know that you were there early for the RTA on Euston Road at such and such a time. Probably they won't follow it up, but there's always a possibility they'll be diligent.

  • Moncho, thanks for looking out for him. Can't really say much more than that. We'd all hope to have somebody like you there if it happened to us.

  • Thanks Steffi. Have just placed the call - switchboard can't find the incident on their system (!) but have passed my details on to the respective station. Be safe out there people.

  • Any more news on this cyclist?

  • Police called me this morning for a witness statement so I asked about the cyclist.

In very abstract police-y terms, he said the collision was very serious but not 'life-threatening', and now not considered 'life-changing' either, therefore the cyclist should be making a full recovery.

Which is excellent news given the gravity of what many of us saw.

Thoughts and best wishes to them still.

  • Well done, Anthony.

  • wow, fantastic news

  • Yes, good news and a great relief.

I think - not 'life changing' is a little bit hopeful. This guy is going to need a lot of support getting his life together after such an experience.

  • Dear All,
This is the cyclists mother here, thank you for all your messages and well wishes. Particularly thank you to anyone who stopped to help him.
I’d just like to let you all know that Alexander is doing very well. It will take time but he should make a full recovery. He is giving up cycling to work though!
Please all of you take care on your bicycles.

  • Delighted to hear that Olivia, hope the recovery goes swiftly. Thanks for letting us know he's ok.

  • ^ Yep, great news. Thanks Olivia, for the update and also to those that helped above.

Please pass on our best wishes to your son...

  • Thanks for the update.
Please let him know many here in cyberspace are wishing a full and speedy recovery.
    Our thoughts are with you.

  • Just want to clarify Alexanders mum is actually called Pat- she posted her message on my account (Olivia) as she doesn't have one. I (Olivia) am his sister!
Thanks all for lovely messages x

  • Very happy to hear that Olivia and Pat. Alexander was very very brave that day.

  • Hello everyone, I'm a friend of Alex's and am very heartened to read your messages of support for him. I'm sure they have been passed on to him already but I'll make sure I remind him of the kind wishes from all of you - it's certainly a challenging time for him.

Thanks to those lovely people who stayed with him until the emergency services arrived, it must have been a horrific thing to witness.

I visited him at the weekend and am delighted to be able to report that his condition is improving and he is in good spirits.

Thanks again for all the support you've given, and for being witnesses. That is truly invaluable. Nice to know there are some good souls out there!

    x

  • Many thanks Alex mum, sister & friend for letting us know he survived. So happy for you all . Too many of these incidents, just last week a young student girl cyclist was killed on junction of St. Pancras way & Camden rd so sad.
