fat burning zone = myth
I thought that the lower intensity workout, measured by heart rate, used the energy resreves more than a higher intensity work out which used up available energy first such as glcogen reserves in the muscles and liver.

You're talking bollocks about something you know next to nothing about.
How's that for something relevant to the thread? -

I swap over and use both arms to balance out my core cross upper body training schedule, it's basically great workout of bi and triceps from frequent lifting of what are known as free vessel weights with decreasing mass.
The fees at my 'gym' are actually relative to how much you drink.

I raise expectations, then let them down, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly.

I spend no money on my fitness*.
I cycle to work (5-6 mile round trip at the moment) 4-5 times a week.
On top of that I'll run 3-4 miles maybe 3 times a week.
I also do rugby training twice a week and cycle to/from that (about 8 mile round trip).
Up until this time of year I'll often be found chasing an egg shaped ball for 80 minutes on a saturday.I'm fairly active and have some fitness goals to work towards, which is why I run on top of the necessary (work) and the hobby (rugby).
From experience, routines can get boring and changing things up is often a good way of pushing yourself and keeping it fresh.
*discounting subs for being part of a rugby club.

I'm presuming she already owns those and talking about the ongoing costs (monthly subscription fees for use of gyms/pools etc).
If you're going to get picky, why not include clothes, food and taxes to pay for upkeep of roads?

The question was: How to get more value?
My answer was do more. -

The question was: How to get more value?
My answer was do more.True, that would be the easyiest way if you have gym membership. But Kattie mentioned a time constraints hence my comments of using a heart monitor to improve the work out.
Wonder about the effect of a creatine powder or increase protein intake (protien shakes) and how that would effect/alter things.

I go to the gym and focus on the 'beach muscles'. Squats LOL!

Is it worth thinking about running to work? (depending on how far you're at).

Don't forget to factor in the cost of internet & electricity, and then put a price on time spent asking for and reading advice....
Less gym or swim, more running means getting through trainers quicker so increased cost. This'd impact on the 'value' being discussed.

Does your current gym not do any classes? I currently do yoga and MMA classes at mine all inclusive £35 (kingshall leisure centre hackney).

Ed - I ran to work yesterday. Its 8.5km and took me about 50min - I'm no speedy gonzalez.
Now I've got 2 bikes I think I'll cycle to work on Fridays, leave bike at work over the weekend and run in on Monday mornings. This means I've still one bike at home for weekend rides, plus it will stop my cycling home pissed on a friday eve - something I do far too often of late.Classes at my current gym are stupid times - like most don't start til 7pm. The spin classes are hard to get a place in (huge demand) and the pump classes are run by the biggest idiot in the world (she can't count to 4, let alone 8).
There is a tiny gym at work - new equipment, but bugger all of it. Its only £18/month though and I'd pay that - just for the use of the shower. I'm so bored at work, I really have nothing to do. I'm pretty sure I could duck out for 1-1.5 hours every day and get my exercise done on work time.... this would be very good! I think for me a lot of my problem is finding the time to exercise.
I will suss out ladies boxing at London Bridge tomorrow.
If all goes according to plan I will:
use the work gym on work time (£18/mth)
kickbox 1x a week (£40/mth)
swim 1x a week (£12.80/mth)
run to work 1x week (free)
go for long rides (free)That is OVER £70/MONTH!
But I think it has to be done.....
I'm going to put off other classes (pump/spin) until the weather turns crap again... shan't be long.
yoga-free.ultimate fitness for life.
as you were.
