• thanks Velocio, that helps me and at least three other regular posters on here,
and our ilk in the U.K

  • They help me too... Sustrans are great, they did a lot of work on the Thames Valley route a while ago and the route is still in good condition as a result of it:

  • I have been trying to find out more about the aquaduct bike, it doesn't appear to exist.
It was a one off design project in 2008 and despite winning a google and specialized award it doesn't appear to have made it into reality. I suggest it comes off the list until I can find out more. (unless anyone knows anything)

  • Just on the off chance anyone wanted to donate any money to a worthy cause.

My oldest friend Cato died just before christmas. It was his funeral today and this page was started for donations.
Treloar's was the school that Cato went to and he absolutely loved it. Treloar's doesn't rely solely on donations but it does help them achieve the 2 million pounds a year they need to raise.

    thanks for reading

  • Hi everyone.
Firstly, I just wanted to say what a great idea these charity donations are. I am the manager of Wheels for Wellbeing (vested interest declared!) and from our point of view I can honestly say that all donations given to charities (whoever the charity), no matter how big or small they may seem, are received with huge gratitude and thanks. Certainly for smaller charities such as ourself, without charitable donations we would not be able to reach the number of people we do. Each session we run costs about £200, that's without the cost of having to buy specialist cycles which are often in the region of £2K each.
We run 3 sessions a week - 2 at Croydon Arena and 1 at Brockwell Park in Brixton. We currently help about 120 people per week at these sessions to gain confidence and the skills needed to maximise their potential in cycling.
Like all charities, we're facing cuts from our usual funders for the next financial year so donations will become all the more important.
Whoever you choose to support, I'm confident that it will make a real different, particularly in these hard times.

  • Great idea and I'd like to second Heathers comments. I work as an instructor for WFW and can't say strongly enough what a fantastic charity it is and how beneficial it is to it's users.

Can i also add another special needs charity project i work on called Gear up, it's held twice a week (weds/thurs mornings) at Sutton arena and helped by a fantastic group of volunteers without whom it would cease to exist. Our only costs are two instructors, arena hire, repair costs and admin costs which are minimal as it is mainly absorbed into the running cost of an environmental community charity EcoLocal. At the moment funding for gear up is extremely low and more is needed to see it through the year. As Heather says charities are the first to suffer in these hard times and i'm sure it will be of real benefit to any of those listed.

Yup, adding Rolla's work to get more kids on bikes, they admit they haven't launched yet and so the site is spartan... but that will change in the nearish future and putting them on the list now makes sure they're down.

Also, fixed the list as a couple of causes got dropped.

  • great work Velocio and forum..

alas i cancelled all standing orders except NSPCC last year. (just upped to £15 pm)
i will have to see how finances pan out after march, but would like to contribute to something

my rugby event is already committed to Leuka this summer, but i get involved in plenty of fundraising activities for school and theatre projects.

there are some very generous folks around, just need the right tone of letter / good story and presto a cheque for £3,000 amazing.

    al

  • So approaching the end of the first 1/4 of 2011.
    What's the plan velocio?

  • I took a look last night... there's a good chunk of money.

There was a spike in donations after the tithe was announced, and this last week has seen a number of £20 donations out of the blue.

At a very quick glance (me doing the sums rather than building a report) there appeared to be north of £1,000 of donations from the start of January 2011 through to end of March 2011.

So there's definitely over £100 to give to charity, and I'm going to ignore the 2 donations that were already made earlier this year as they already exceed what the tithe has raised so I'll just do a "left hand doesn't know about the right-hand" thing.

As soon as today finishes, and the accounts all sync tomorrow (it's all done automatically), I'll get the actual figures out of the system and will apportion the funds over some of the charities suggested. Then will pay those out, hopefully tomorrow.

  • +100 brilliant mate!
See you on the marathon ride

  • OK, So the forum took over £1200 in donations in the first three months of the year, resulting in £122 to go to charity as part of the tithe.

The list of charities proposed was:

    1. LCEF: http://lcef.wordpress.com/
    2. Emilie Gossiaux: http://www.emiliegossiaux.com/
    3. Pedal power (http://www.hackney-cyclists.org.uk/pedalpower.htm)

    9. Rollapaluza Community Interest Company http://www.rollapaluza.org/
    10. http://www.cyclistsdefencefund.org.uk/

Emilie Gossiaux has already benefited from multiple large donations, so I'm skipping her on this occasion.

The money will be split amongst:

    1. LCEF - £32
    2. Wheels for Wellbeing - £30
    3. Sustrans - £30
    4. Rollapaluza Outreach - £30

And I've just paid all of that, so those involved should see it already (or whenever their accounts update next).

  • Velocilanthropist!

  • On behalf of Wheels for Wellbeing - THANK YOU! I've yet to see it in the bank, but if you've donated through JustGiving, then it does take a while to come through. Again, thanks so much for supporting us!

  • Just Giving was awkward to use as I only had an old personal account and it wouldn't let me setup one for LFGSS.

It would've been great if I could've just donated directly somehow. I'm assuming somewhere in the background you've got a paypal account, you should publish that on your site so that people can go direct if they want to.

That said, it was a pleasure sending the money your way.

  • Thanks from the http://lcef.wordpress.com/

    You're rocking, we're rolling.

  • hey Velocio
Was the forum donation due quarterly?
If so were almost due again:)

Also are we keeping the same list?

  • It's whenever I remember.

6 months from April 1st to September 30th raised £1,773.90 in donations, so £177 will be donated to charity.

I'm happy to delay the donation for a week to give people a chance to nominate any more causes. Remember that if you are nominating it doesn't do just to slap a link up here, tell me why you think they should be included. Good reasons, and personal connections to people on the forum, are more of a sway than anything... the more human, the more likely that they'd get the cash.

I'd rather put the money towards only 2 charities, so am looking for something that would be appropriate. And a reminder, the causes don't have to be registered charities and can be individuals who deserve forum support for some reason (I don't have anyone in mind, but I want to emphasise that you're not limited to just established charities).

This is an awesome idea and a really nice thing to do.

  • Oh that reminds me, I did get a reply from the Aquaduct designers, http://theaquaduct.blogspot.com/
despite winning the Google Specialized "Innovate or Die" award they never went into production. They have offered me the design if I can raise funds to put it into production. I started to put together a business case to get these into production but it has so many obstacles I had to give up. Next year I might get funded to spend enough time overcoming the obstacles to run a trial in Ethiopia, but I won't know for a while.

  • Very rough estimates for period since Sep 2011 to now suggests another £100 should be added.

So it's standing at approx' £280.

After reading Pete Mitchell's site ( http://www.petemitchell.co.uk/ ) and seeing kingcutter's requests for sponsorship of a cycling team that includes a few new talents, I'm strongly inclined to put the money in that direction.

  • More than strongly inclined. Going to top up with a few payments over time out of my business too, so that the effect is that LFGSS sponsors the team to some capacity, even though the lion's share will come from my own company.

  • if you sponsor the cycling team, will they add an LFGSS.com sticker to their jerseys?

  • Apparently. Which will be nice. Not that there's any business benefit of doing so (don't tell my accountant this), but it's the right thing to do.
