  • Hi all,

It seems I'm now the proud owner of a nice old Campangolo Pista fluted crankset (BCD 151). But no chainring.

Ok, so not the most common size in the world but it looks like I have a few options:

I wonder if anybody has words of wisdom regarding these options?

    Or any other suggestions?

    thanks!

    Joachim

  • big jos will more than likely have something

  • Really depends on what you're using the bike for.
You can switch sizes of the sprocket easily enough to get a good gear ratio for the track.
I have the same cranks (165mm) and use a 46t with reinforced shoulder.

I've varied the sprocket between 14t and 17t.

Old campy 151 rings can be expensive. I wouldn't pay £70 though!
Campy oldy have a used 47t which is cheap. Don't know if it's 1/8 or 3/32 though.

I'd find a good priced ring from eBay and change the sprocket according to the gear ratio you want.
Seen a good range on the bay going for much better prices.

If you're gonna be skidding, best work out skid patches to get the most from your tyres depending on ring/sprocket sizes.

^^^Good size for track and use a 19t sprocket with it for road / skids ;-)

  • Sugino Mighty Competition rings come in BCD 151 they fit and they come up on ebay

  • I'd wait around for ebay as well, unless you're really keen on a quick solution.

49 is fine for the velodrome - 49x15 gives 88 gear inches which is about right and you can go up to 14 or 13 or down to 16 or even 17 and have a good range of gears.

49x19 happens to be the ratio I think is best for the road as it's about 70 gear inches and with 19 skid patches.

  • wouldn't you be re-stricted to fairly big rings with a 151BCD??!!

NOS Pista ring - Currently $50 + $14 postage to UK - you could go to $100?

  • (thats the same as the one that todd posted)

  • dogsballs wouldn't you be re-stricted to fairly big rings with a 151BCD??!!

Looks like about 44 is the smallest that would fit. But even with that it doesn't seem like it's hard to get down to around 60 gear inches if need be.

    Or no?

    thanks

Yeah, I've been watching those, but thinking this isn't going to be a purely track machine, so as big as 52/53 might not give me many options for something a little more street friendly - like around the late 60" to mid 70" range.

    thanks!

  • street friendly, yet you spent big on just cranks. ummm!!

  • You can get up to 22T cog sprockets, so 53 should be OK too.

  • 52 teeth sugino here, as well as 47, 49 and 53 campy, cheaper than campy oldy

Ok, maybe not THAT street friendly.

i.e. I don't expect it's ever going to get cold. or wet. My other bikes can do that :-)

  • I'm riding a 52t chainring on my new machine. The size seems to work well with the look of the bike. I use a 20t Andel sprocket (Parker International £12) and it's as 'street friendly' as it gets. Not so many skid patches but I have a brake anyway. That makes about 68 inches which I may take up to 70 with a 19t to get a bit of speed up! Pedalling with 68 inches is tooooo easy, but not downhill! ;-)

  • Check keirin cycle culture cafe here

They seem to have what you are after, though at a price.

  • why 60 gear inches that seems a bit spiny to me

  • cos some people like to spin! 46-18 for the win!

  • thanks people!

Just to let you know I've ended up with a good deal on both a 48 and 52 (thanks Jos!). Which seems to give me plenty of range to play around with once it's rolling.

  • Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but this is the only thread on the topic that came up when utfsing.
Anyway Ive got a similar problem, I have a lovely set of ofmega mistrals but they are converted road doubles. The inner chainring is 53 t or something equally huge so no good for riding on the street. I currently run a 48t TA ring which does the job but I want one with the mistral bolt pattern.
I got in touch with Andy from fixamatosis and he said hed be able to do it for me but Ive not heard anything back from him the last few times I emailed. Is there anyone else that could manufacture one for me? Added bonus if it could be made from ti.

  • try these guys

  • Hi There,

I have a BIG selection of 151 BCD rings,( around 35 or so ) Campag, Shimano, Williams and Sugino sizes from 45 to 55 if you need a size I have a few of it will be quite cheap to sort you out if you still need one.

    regards Allister

  • He Allister,
I'm ready to take some of those 151 chainrings of your hands.....

  • A good few of the bigger ones have gone but if you let me know what size you want I will look them out from the parts bin.
