I have an old Cinelli steel stem that is need of re chroming. Anyone got any idea if the £25 mobidog quoted is still about what it costs and can anyone recommend a company to do it?

Surely if you're talking about chroming stems and handlebars, you should be going for the polishing route. Find somewhere that does high quality buffing and polishing until the stem is shiny and new, or do it yourself.
I remember seeing a thread on here on how to polish bike parts, but you have to search for it as I can't be bothered. -

A friend of mine thinking of chroming the whole frame.. don't know where to recommend hmm..

If it's cheap I might get my fork done (it's currently laquer painted). Wonder if you have to get the paint taken off prior or whether the chemicals involved in the chroming process will do so.

Ah, lpg's post appears to have answered my question - a discount might be available if the object is presented minus paint. If I get the rest of the frame powder coated at armourtex, I wonder whether they'd be kind enough to just blast the paint off the fork and not powder it.

Been looking into this, a place cropped up in Kent doing it forks for 120 GBP, which seems a bit overkill looking at some of the prices here....
However, ever the cynic, I'm sure there is a pay-off between cost and quality, trouble is where does this point lie?!
Think I'll just respray the forks fer now.

Just picked up some forks from London Chroming. They've come out really nice. They stripped them, cleaned them and chromed them for 65 quid. Really friendly service, I'd recommend them.

RE London Chroming. Being a motorcyclist too , I spotted this on a Yamaha forum http://www.yamahaxjrownersclub.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=42670
Not sure I'd trust my forks to these guys.. -

Frame and forks for a small ladies frame is approx £290 quoted by London Chroming - 30th April 2012.

To people considering this, think about restoring existing chrome instead. Amazing what can be done. Rechroming is only worthwhile for museum/indoor collection pieces. The prep is very laborious and therefore understandably expensive.

Anyone know which places still exist, this would be for stripping paint and chroming, so not rechroming..

london chroming on old kent road is good, and still going. used them a couple of weeks ago for an old steel stem. don't know if i'd trust them with a frame, but i guess ends / drop outs / lugs are thick enough?
i used them to rechrome, but presumably they can chrome new things too.
They might not strip paint, but armourtex do. and so does paint stripper.
