  • To all these various puking cat problems, could it be a simple matter of overfeeding? Cats really don't need that much food but they have no facility for realising when they've eaten enough so sometimes they just eat too much too fast and CHUNDER EVERYWHERE.

  • Found it hard to live without a kitty after George died, so bought this little basket case the other week.

  • Jesus christ, I didn't realise that cat diet was so complex. I just feed Bangers half nice wet food, half science plan. Seems to be OK- though my housemate (the owner - currently travelling) used to supplement his diet with plates of venison blood and bits of small fowl.

It's not complex - cats are obligate carnivores, and therefore should only eat fresh meat & some bones. Left to their own devices, they would eat small creatures (which some speculate is the reason that humanity domesticated them - to control rodents that preyed on the cereal stores that humanity created at the dawn of civilisation).

Since we have taken over the role of feeding them, the complications have come principally from the meat rendering industry,, who supply a lot of the meat that goes into pet food, and the pet food manufacturers, who introduced carb-rich cereals into cat food.

As I am sure you can imagine, a lot of the cheaper meat supplied by the renderers, apart from being cooked, which is undesirable, is of questionable nutritional value because it is often meat which is not fit for human consumption. I have read that some of this meat is supplied by vets themselves, ie come from dead pets or diseased livestock.

Carbohydrate rich food has NO place in a cat's diet - in the wild, the only time a cat is likely to ingest any kind of cereal is when they eat the stomach of prey, and the stomach contains a recent meal, and this would be in negligible quantities.

As other people have mentioned, cats will eat grass, but not in any significant quantities.

  • Anyway, of our 2 cats, Lulu went mental for wild rabbit the very first time she saw /smelt it - didn't have to persuade her at all - but then when she gets bored, she quite happily decimates all the grass on the balcony, and then sicks it up, and doesn't seem to have any concept of portion control.

Oscar, on the other hand, had to be heavily persuaded that raw meat was a superior meal to the dry food we were giving him. We still have to crumble up fishy squares on to his food, and often he won't touch the meat until it is at room temperature, whereas Lulu would probably eat anything we put down if she saw that it had come out of the freezer compartment.

  • Wait, what?

Given what is considered fit for human consumptin, how diseased do you think meat has to be before it is considered unfit?

  • Hi Guys

Anyone know a good canine behavioural person? We got a lovely Cocker Spaniel about 3 months ago when he was about 14 months old. He's great round the house but is so anxious of other dogs... will chase em barking his head off, very frustrating. Had those fairytale dreams of meeting all those other dog owners over the park etc.. At the moment I turn and walk in the other direction whenever we see another dog!
I'm in SE London.. any recommendations?

    Cheers
    Nic

From my experiences with dogs I've figured they are just as social as we are (or need to be),and the more other dogs they are around when growing up, generally the better they are at dealing with meeting new dogs later in life, greeting them right, approaching them right, reacting or not reacting to the other dogs movements.

Saying that, we've got a pair of weird ones. As pictured on the last page, casper (flying dog) is utterly brilliant with other dogs, but not so great with humans (badly treated by humans at a young age) and can bite if cornered, he's 7 and since we got him (6months) he's got better, but not to the point you can trust him with a stranger without giving the stranger VERY specific instructions on how to handle him.
The other, bushy, is a lunatic. Got him from a rescue 6months ago, he's actually 12, but he thinks he is 18months (and looks it), brilliant with people, perfect infact. But other dogs? he'll eat them. not in an angry way, we're pretty sure its sexual frustration, he doesn't bite them, instead stalks them, then when he's close enough to be able to smell them, charges at them, and nips at their rear end. Bizarre and the only way to improve him is keeping him on a lead when around other dogs, which isn't always possible!

  • *its sexual frustration, he doesn't bite them, instead stalks them, then when he's close enough to be able to smell them, charges at them, and nips at their rear end.

*Is this just further proof that dogs grow up to resemble their owners?

  • I think Lily's Kitchen do pre-packaged raw pet food, but it's pretty expensive. They also use carrots in it which I find a bit odd. However, I think it is 60% meat.

@ oz is it worth getting a second opinion from another vet? Also, have you tried Feliway?

  • my beloved dog Tassie died a year ago today. miss her every day :(

  • one of my pet rats is ill. Think it's going to be a trip to the vets tomorrow. I'm really worried because rats hide symptoms as long as they possibly can as in the wild they would get abandoned for the good of the mischief(a group of rats).

  • Cat Pr0n ...

  • What makes you think that it's unfit for human consumption? Plenty of rendered meat goes into the human food chain. What is diseased meat in any case?

Meat that comes from diseased animals, either livestock or pets.

    Hope all goes well Sumo..

  • so it's an urban myth that commercial pet food is all "fit for human consumption"?

  • rats are great pets but it sucks that they die so young :(
for their intelligence and character, it just doesn't seem right.

  • What sort of diseases? What's the impact of eating diseased meat?

I'll give you CJD, F&M and Scrapie.

I think the point is that the meat that goes into pet food is even worse than that, hence why it is cheaper. Meat (if you can call what comes out of the rendering factories that) which can be sold to humans will fetch a higher price than that which is destined for livestock or pets. I don't believe that you can recycle dead pets into burgers, legally, whereas, apparently, this is legal in the pet-food industry.
