  • Yes, it's quite extraordinary, even as London cranks go. There's always a much more interesting story hidden inside them, why they do this sort of thing. After he died, an agency apparently hired by his heirs tried to demolish it to have something else built on the site (which is in a conservation area), but the Council stopped them after they had knocked the top storey off. That's why it now looks even sadder than it did while he lived there.

    Completely off topic, well, out of London anyway, check out the Williamson tunnels in Liverpool Oliver. Another man who loved to tunnel with no apparent purpose but on a huge, industrial scale. It's a pretty amazing story.
