  • Changing gear under load means changing gear while pedalling.

That's something you shouldn't really do with an internal gear!

There's a reason why the SA 3 speed fixed hubs have a play - to allowed you to ease off the pressure and change gear.

  • If you get rich off this, send me 50% of your earnings or I'll terrorise your family.

For fuck's sake Ed. I know. That's why I want to try a CVT which allows it.

  • Just put him on ignore.

                           Hi Jornole,

In regards to the efficiency loss, that is not information that we publish to the public. Unfortunately, you will not be able to find that information anywhere.

  • The 419 letter sounds like a great idea. I'll be a millionnaire in no time!

But seriously, my design is pretty simple. I've seen the NuVinci and that feels a lot more prone to going wrong. I mean the whole friction thing in everything you've linked me to seems a bit silly, especially when it comes to fixies.

Does anyone have experience in getting new designs prototyped/funding for patents?

  • ^ my university is paying for my patent applications for me.

There are companies and organisations out that that will give you free consultations on whether your idea is a)patentable b)defendable and c)likely to make any money. There are also patent startup help companies that'll do the paperwork for you, give you a few years to start your business, then ask for the money later. If you're confident that your design will sell, then this could be a way to go.

Do be warned that defending your patent can cost tens of thousands of pounds.

  • Nuvinci on production bikes at VELOBerlin, couldn't find one on the test track though.
