Mad? Raleigh record sprint rebuild

  • Here it is,

    Garden was lookin nice that day, so was hard to avoid getting a few blossoms in shot, plus my brothers scooter was in the way.


    If I remember correctly, I got the frame, forks, stem, bars, 105 headset, stronglight cranks, and a beaten up 5 speed rear wheel for £30

    I was quite pleased at the time, but then a couple of weeks later I saw a guy buy a record with 100% of the original flashy gold parts, for £15 so I was pretty annoyed!

    I got the fixed 27" rear wheel on a different ocassion, it was pretty expensive finding a decent tyre for it.

    I was running a dented "egg" shaped front wheel ffor a while which I got for £5!

    Then I got a pair of really solid mavic hybrid wheels, which I swapped for a suspension fork with a friend. So im running one of those up front.

    Anyway, I was recently toying with the idea of getting a fuji track. But ive decided this is way better, and lugged forks just look class.

    My chain tension & gear ratio is perfect and Ive switched the QR for a "safer" bolted axle too.

    It makes me happy it does. Ive named it "the duke"

    Bought a raliegh record ace last week. £130... maybe got fleeced there. Its nice condition (although seat post is jammed in nice and hard). Just finished stripping it down and about to start my conversion. its my first one so any hints or tips? im going fixed and a little concerned about getting the chain tension right. went to brick lane bikes to check costs etc and they just mumbled £300 which worried me a lot. How do you know what chain size to buy? Anyone have any issues?

    also going to get it repainted and debating whether to saw off some of the uneccesary poky metal bits (break mounts etc). Am i committing sacriledge???

    im sweating baby, any help much appreciated!!

    I have converted one. You may need to file the drive side drop out to give yourself more room to tension the chain. Its a odd drop out, sort of half filled so there is plenty of surplus metal to file. Essentially, try and get it to the same shape as the non drive side.

    Other than that, pretty straight forward to convert.

  • Some of the raleigh record ace models were pretty high end, higher quality bikes than the record sprints discussed above so you may have done fine, for all things building and stuck seatpost then http://sheldonbrown.com/ is the man.

  • yeah sheldons the man. currently working through his 15 tips.

    the bits i want to file off most are the runners for the break cable which go along the top of the tube. quite annoying and i can foresee collisions with my groin. getting it spray painted so will probably try and remove,

  • does anyone know what size the stem clamp is on a record sprint? I want some new charge bull horn bars for it and they are 25.4mm

  • I Got Myself a Quaser with the mind to converting it to a fixie and then got roped in to the london to brighton next year!! my last quaser got nicked in 85!

    So I am kitting it out ready for that but with a fixie in mind later on! fortunatley all the gear on it was mint even the wheels and mechs so its all bee put in the cupboard as i want a ten speed casette ... it pays to be different

  • My current pub bike is a Record Ace. Its a lovely frame underneath all the tatty crap (rust, dirt, stickers etc...).
    I had a Record Sprint for a while too. Its currently rotting in the back of a shed.

    Ace>Sprint - anyday, but both good stuff.

    first post - be gentle. have read around Sheldon and have been reading the forum for a while and tried to follow rules for newbies but I'm sure besides all the welcomes someone will point out where I haven't conformed to protocol (kindly intentioned to stop me embarassing myself again)
    Anyway there seemed to be enough positive about the Record Sprint so when I saw one right size on ebay I grabbed it (£62 if you're interested).
    looks good....worst of it is wheels trashed....but I figured I'd be setting up with a flip-flop and picked up a set off a mate's Langster when he upgraded his hoops and fortunately the triangle width / axle length is same
    trying to get it spinning with as little investment as possible and keen to learn to do the jobs myself rather than hand it all over.

    guess I should go for a new chainset (48T)....but is there something that'd work with the existing BB or should I bite the bullet and fit new BB same time? went to forum recommended BLB and new BB was £15 and £15 to fir and then £65 for chain set and I felt £95 was a bit higher than I'd planned.

    alternatively I like the gold cranks and it looked like someone was running one single speed on the original chainset with the small cog removed ? would the chainline be ok? would I be better off with a thicker ring & chain (1/8) anyway I have seen that 48:16 was recommended starting ratio and even though I push a big gear on my road bike the 52T might be a bit much (or easier on the downhills fixed?).....is it possible to get a 48T ring intended as single onto this crankset?

    Can anyone recommend the Driveline Track Chainset as I could pick one of these up new with an English BB for £42 which is better than £95 at BLB much as I'd like to give them the work.

    cant find the answers already within forum and Sheldon's great section on Raleighs is all pre-80s.

    sorry for rambling....if I wasn't so new I could post this as two or three more specific questions.

    great forum and if anyone is interested in parts I take off the Sprint I'd be glad to see them get good home (especially in return for advice)

  • not wishing to reply to my own post but wanted to point out that after posting this the penny dropped and another 50mins web research tells me that to keep using my original 110BCD Sugino GT cranks I'd be looking for a 48T 110 BCD ring.
    Notice there's many a post about these but all in the wanted and none in the for sale.
    Have tried following the various (BMX) suggestions and cant find any 48T to reassure me they're obviously SS 1/8 and if I did it'd be £40

    • guess this is why BLB suggest I replace the whole chainset for £65

    it was daylight when I started this research.....and now it's just a few hours til I have to get up for work.

  • I have a Record Sprint (my first build) and have kept the original gold sugino cranks, but did manage to pick up a (gold) 47T 110 BCD ring from these guys on eBay for £15. Might be worth contacting them to see if they have any more lurking somewhere?

    Only other option I found was the £45 Surly effort, still for sale on eBay, but, like you say, probably not worth it.

  • I've just started to convert my 80's Record Sprint to single speed and want to run 48 - 18 gearing.

    Will a 48T chainset fit on the front ok?
