ha, amazing video. I'm gutted that when I worked in NYC I never met any messengers like that!
Uhhh physics A level seems so long ago. What on earth am I working out? Force of two moving objects maybe...
You would be working out the forces of a moving object (bike & rider) hitting a stationary object (car). Bust most significantly the forces created at the weakest points (hinges) by a door which protrudes away from the larger body it is attached to (car) and if this force is great enough to either snap off the hinges or severly bend them or the car body. To calculate things reasonably well, things would get fairly complicated.

Ah, then you must have met Austin Horse at Times Up. He's a bad ass too (allbeit a socially awkward one).

No? I feel like I've missed someone great here! That's the really established place off Bedford right? Been there a few times. I miss living there so much! I heard it's changed so bad.

Speed of travel plus riders weight 'scribbles' divided by angle of door 'scribbles' add yield of steel and mechanical properties 'scribbles' plus iq of car driver divided by weather conditions 'scribbles, thinks, 'scribbles''
And the answer is:
Oh fuck that really hurt.

I'd like to see you prove it. I have still images the in my head from a door ok, not "coming off" but snapping the door strap, bending the doorskin, front wind and pulling the 'A' pillar hinges out of line. If you can produce the correct mathematical calculations to prove my memory wrong fair enough
I think I proved that last night. 'narrow gap' and 'bruise in the thigh' should give you a clue that I hit the door with my thigh (hence the bruised thigh) and the door wasn't fully open (due to the narrow gap)
However if you want to try to prove me wrong I have the driver's phone number. I'm sure he won't mind you trying to repeat the experiment to see if you can take the door off yourself with your own thigh.
Of course a cyclist could break a car door if they were fast/heavy enough, and the door was fully open. But I don't think I would be sitting here typing this if that had been the case.
It is slightly annoying that nobody said 'shit, is your leg ok?' or 'you could have broken your leg!' except for the driver. No, the fact that I could have broken the car door is the important thing here

be careful out there pastry ,hope you leg is good enough for sunday......
couriers shutting car doors in videos is bullshit ride like that every day and its only a matter of time before your splatted
-
• #33
Easy there, it's a pretty safe assumption that you're ok as you haven't said you've broken anything.
As many of us have won the door prize before (I flew 16 feet once, the fire department measured it for me) the fact that you have been hit by a door is not a new idea, however the debate as to whether you could have taken the door with you or not is (and a concept you yourself introduced).
Heal up and relax.

I didn't say I could do it, but he does ride that way every day, has done for over ten years.

I have taken off a wingmirror before now, didn't feel it at all so I can imagine with a bit more speed it's possible, Hoy or Forsterman could do it no problems..
Forstermann would just ride under the door.

I wasnt referring to you or anyone in particular ,his riding doesnt impress me in the slightest, cars will always win the splat test when it comes to a cyclist
Any how hope to meet up with you on Sunday Pastry -

Is your bike damaged at all?
nah, surprisingly

nor was lance but he did ok -

Are you actually saying that someone who became a pro at age 16 isn't a natural athlete?
-

micheal jordan was shit at basketball apparently, but trained so long and hard that he became totally awesome.
-
• #42
I thought he just got turned down lots because he was too short when he was younger? This reminds me we need to start bball again this summer.
-
• #43
This is pretty much how I spend my life, trying to become awesome. So far, not so good.
-
• #44
Ditto. If at first you don't succeed...

Score! Talk bball at beers.

Lee, hope the thigh is healing. Glad to hear you are ok and it is not anything too serious
-
• #48
Cheers Jason. Do you have any sportives planned soon?

Uhhh physics A level seems so long ago. What on earth am I working out? Force of two moving objects maybe...
rate of change of momentum is force, 1/2mv2 is kinetic energy. To tear the door off you are probably more interested in the force as that will tell you whether the bolts that hold the door to the car can take it. So, I think you are right.

I am vaguely, you could work it out that way but there is a quicker way. But at least Pastry's okay!
No, I hung out at/visited so many different bike projects over there though and met some amazing people!
