  • Not being of the fixed persuasion I know nothing about the various non-cleat bindings that came after Powergrips - what, if any, pedals and straps combos are suitable for polo?

  • Mr K i can make you some, Adams using the same ones at the mo, i did start using some straps for polo but took them off as i found i didnt feel comfortable being strapped in.

You just need some pedals with holes in the side, DMR or welgo work well, some plastic ones are ok too

  • I'm very used to cleats from other riding but want the option to not be clipped during games - hence I'm not going that route. Ste - could I try a pair of your old ones for a weekend to see if I can get on with them? Sadly I've just picked up a set of nice DXs without the gaps in the side...but do have some Wellgos somewhere.

On another topic - I just bought a second hand Phil Wood KISSOFF rear hub - it's just the most gorgeous piece of bike jewellery I've ever owned!

  • yeh i have some old ones il bring them tomorrow

  • I've been tempted by something like this since watching people hop about with spds & stuff, not sure if like being attached to my bike though, especially as I fall off a lot

  • i would say SPD's im gonna try mine out 2moro, straps felt to hard to get out of when falling for footdown because you have to pull backwards where as spds you can go sideways

  • I'm very used to cleats from other riding...

Aye, you struck me as the type to be used to them (it's all those retro MTB Bits that gave you away). I'd say for anyone who's already used to them, clipless pedals make far more sense than clips/straps etc.

  • Maybe I should find some of those touring-style one sided SPDs to try...

  • That's what i am planning on using Neil, once i find some bloody cleats. Might just bite the bullet and buy some on my way home tonight

  • im gonna try my spds tonight see how it goes, the only thing i think would be bad about 1 sided ones is messing about flipping the pedal round when you want to clip back in quickly

  • Yeah, I've used one-sided and two-sided SPD's, and I think for polo you'd be better of with two sided. I doubt you'll gain much ground clearance from one sided, and foot support isn't as much of an issue.

I recon you'd do well with some multi-release cleats if you're worried about unclipping in time. Wouldn't ride them fixed on the road, but free-wheel for polo I think they'd work rather well.

  • used them last night, they were really good, no issues with normal cleats set loose

only thing im thinking, it would be nice to have support rouns the clip so want some of these

  • Don't DXs have a bigger platform than those pictured?

  • think its the angle of the shot?

gonna get some of the old ones anyway, much cheaper

  • ...with normal cleats set loose...

I've been running mine tighter than usual, seems to help with hopping about. Horses for courses and wotnot...

If your gear is adequately small (sub 55" at a guess...?) decent flats with mid-length pins should be enough for polo, with the added advantage of making the comedy-jog dismount easier.

Once you're above the "madly spinning nutter" gears, I'd go for clipless rather than straps.

I found it really good being able to pull up when sprinting

  • @voidcore did you post on UAC?
