yeah aluminum cranks and pedals with aluminum axles can corrode together into a bit of a mess. But generally soak them in a penetrating oil like plus gas or wd40 will help to an extent. leave them in a pot of the stuff (or wrapped up in a rag drenched in the stuff, obv just the pedal/crank interface, both sides) for at least 24hours.
After that just take it easy, as once you've stripped the allen bolt hole or spanner area your done for. Decent quality tools (never use an adjustable for a start) and sensible use of them will avoid that.
Also true old alu could potentially cause trouble, but its entirely down to how its been used/ stored/ quality control when it was cast/ and luck. Old steel is generally more reliable but theirs a weight penalty. Also using a touring/ racing crank for fixed/track will probably lead to failure as well!
IF its just clips thats teh problem just swap them over, a lot of old shimano pedals had the same little 3 screw bracket thing and should be fairly cross compatible, can't hurt to try?

Thanks BM. Yeah decided to save myself the cash and swap the clips over. Feels much nicer than the plastic ones.
Will have to try soaking them up one weekend and give it another shot. Hopefully it will work because I really would like to swap to the 600's as they are more shiny fresh. :)
(This might be badly written/explained because I'm at work, in a rush to write this.)
So struggled to get my old Shimano 105 pedals off last night, after wanting to replace them with the 600's. Took my bike to my LBS. The guy struggled too.
So, pedals are near enough impossible to get off without damage, as I've been told.
He said that there are some long procedures that might make it possible to do with heating etc, or something like that.
Anyway, will have to replace the cranks in order to get to use my other pedals.
Now, the question is... Do I?
He said it was not recommended to cycle with old Aluminium Cranks as they can eventually snap?
The main reason why I wanted to replace my pedals is because my plastic clips are very worn, and I wanted to replace these with metal ones, and decided to go for an entire swap.
It will cost £60 for a shiny Shimano crank set.
Do I? Or don't? I feel it's not worth it at the moment.
105's & 600's ar every similar. So I can just swap over the clips anyway...
