Why would anyone in their right mind buy a heavy, cumbersome piece of shit to tour the hazardous terrain of South America??!
Fuck me, he'll be putting panniers on a Brooklyn Gansta next!? Oh.....
To be fair, my mate cycled from Scotland to South Africa on an ancient Kona mtb frame - seemed in a pretty similar vein to Ed's. Although I have to admit I shared your sentiment on first sight. . .

damn right I'm going to kit the fuck out of it, I only just received the bike and hasn't done anything to it.
I've Rigida ceramic rims with SON generator front hubs and Phil Wood rear touring hubs (with phil bottom bracket), soon to have a Chris King headset.
it'll also have steel chrome mudguard and steel front and rear rack (easier to repair when it break), I already got the huge pannier for the rear, just need to get the front one.
The dynamo hubs will powered most of my stuff that needed it, this kind of kitted out minus the drop;
I don't think pisti can tell the difference between a touring bicycle and a BSO.

an old MTB bicycle make a great affordable touring bike if those couldn't afford to stretch more than £1000 for a Thorn Sherpa or similar.
You can read about it here.
