you need to get one of the mounting jobbies in the attached image (ignore the light) rather than using the adjustable sort. it's the old mounting system and is much better imo. they sell them in most bike shops for a couple of quid.

You may have just solved this for me...sure I've got one of the old mounts in my spare parts box! Will give it a go... Might have to buy another one for my racer though as I swap lights between bikes.
