you have clinchers, folders will be as good as non folding

• #3
still a noob after 2 years on here?
-

Yes, I wanted a singlespeed bike for about 3 years. I only finally got one about 3 months ago. I lurk on the site quite often.
I don't have much bike knowledge and it's a good place to ask the experts.

Thanks for the answer, so I can buy folding or non folding it doesnt matter? Is one easier than the other to fit myself?
-
• #6
have you ever had a puncture?
-
• #7
Only on a MTB
-
• #8
I think folding tyres are more expensive,
-
• #9
were you tyres folders or wire bead?
clinchers? -
• #10
My limited knowledge:
Clincher type tyres have a wire that runs around both sides known as the bead, this fits into the circumferential grooves that form a lip on the edge of the rim.
When the inner tube is inflated it holds the bead firmly against/under the lip, which combined with the bead holding the tyres shape against the pressure holds the tyre on.
Cheaper tyres use a steel wire for the bead, more expensive tyres use a kevlar wire.
The steel cannot be folded, the kevlar can.
Kevlar is lighter, and the tyres are usually more expensive and better quality.

Folding are a bit easier to fit. Search on here for one of the tyres threads for advice on which ones, check park tool and Sheldon brown for general repair and maintenance advice.

Clincher wheels = ordinary wheels. (i.e. not tubulars)
Folding tyres are smaller when posted to you. and a bit lighter. No difference really in how easy they are to fit.
What's up with the tyres on it?
-
• #13
They arent cool enough and I want to be trendy
-
• #14
There are cool tyres?
-
• #15
Halo twin rail couriers then, fairly good tyres available in 'cool' colours. Wire bead I think though.
-
• #16
Surely Gatorskinz are the cool tyre?
-
• #17
Remember though that cool colour today might not be cool tomorrow, so you might have to buy new tyres every day.
-
• #18
Are these cool? I don't want people to think im not hip and that

Continental make the only cool tyres. FACT.
-
• #20
there is nothing cool about repairing punctures on some ridiculous hipster approved coloured tyres when you could have bought a decent pair of tyres instead
-
• #21
Well I want some black tyres with a red stripe that will fit my clincher wheels.
If anyone has any suggestions then post them here.

Schwalbe are exceptionally good tyres.
I don't know whether the Ultremos are too lightweight and prone to punctures for the city streets, but you could take a look on the Schwalbe site to see how they compare with the others. -

In fact I haven't had one for 2 years and I cycle to work daily.

durano's or gatorskins are the best.
Marathon plus's or Vittoria Rando's for the most puncture protection, but higher rolling resistance.
I have a Charge Plug Freestyler, I want to change the tyres but there are different types. Folding or something else. Which ones do I need?
Also what are clincher wheels and what wheels do I have?
