Looks about right. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/bearings.html
I'm sure someone with a lot more knowledge than I will be along shortly to explain the play in your BB.

a tiny bit of play is a good thing. how much play is there?

Enough for a 3-4mm wobble. Maybe I'll strip it down again, clean and regrease. Could under tightening be the problem? Can you over tighten these old BB's?

Do you have a cottered crank? Is the play in the BB or where the crank meets axle?

Hi, it's cotterless. The axle itself looked ok and not to worn, hence I think it maybe the bearings, although I purchased new ones. There seems to be play when you lift the crank, whcih would make me think its a gap between the bearing and axle.
Hi, This is my first post as a Virgin LFGSS member, so here goes. I have just finished converting an old raleigh flyer into a single speed. The bearings in the bottom brackret were pretty mashed, so i replaced them with 1/4", (I guessed the size!!). There still seems to be some play, should I have gone for the 5/16" instead? Does anybody know the correct size bearing for a Raleigh 26tpi BB??
Thanks
