Removing old glue from 50's track wheels

Posted on
  • So I'm finally putting my bike together after many dramas that have got in the way.

It's at the paint shop at the moment, should look pretty damn good when it comes out.

The next parts are the wheels. I managed to get some old bacon slicers off a guy who found them at a carboot sale, got them cheap!

The bike they came off was a real old track bike with these wheels, inch pitch drive train, so I'm thinking they're 27". I've compared them to some of my 27" clincher rims and they seem a bit smaller. Maybe it's more tubular vs clincher than 27" vs 700. I'll take them to my lbs and compare them to some others.

Has anyone got any advice about getting rid of the old glue before I try and polish them and rebuild them.

Also, any idea of 27" tubular tyres? I think continental still make some.

    Cheers,

    Alex

  • Acetone - get the industrial stuff, not the nail polish remover and use in the open, fumes are a bit 'special'

  • 'special' fumes....

it's been a while but i'm sure i'll get through it, maybe get a beer, some sun, some 'special' fumes.

is that the kind of thing you can get from a hardware store?

  • yeah, even wilko's sell it. If not that in most decent sized supermarkets and 'random' shops (think poundland etc) do a 'sticky stuff remover' which often boast they are citrus based (when they probably have nothing to do with fruits). They work well, just don't spill it on quarry tiles, as it seeps into them and stains them for life! I learnt this the hard way :/

Also that inch pitch cog is mental, probably worth the monies as well!
And yeah, conti still make clincher tubs in 27" I've gone down the 27" clincher route as its what my bike was designed for, and what looks 'right' and will probably go with gatorskins (que hippy on a 'why you shouldn't buy conti tyres' rampage).
