• I have recently moved to the heart of londons fashionable east end (London fields) and am looking for some good new routes for leisure rides rather than commutes once the sun comes out again.

I used to live in Herne Hill and my personal favourite was out to Richmond Park, round once and back again so a nice 20 miles or so on pretty quiet roads and cyclepaths at my own pace but still a satisfying distance. Does anyone have any thoughts on similar runs starting from the East?

    Cheers

  • Out into Essex.

    Along the canals.

  • Noted. I have done the canals up North (Tottenham Lock direction) but will definitely look into the Essex run as well. Is that the Lea Valley or am i getting my geography mixed up?

  • Think so. Only been out into Essex once myself but I thoroughly recommend it - this is the route we took on a ride out to Matching Green last year, really nice run.

  • That sounds like a top run, cheers! I get quite put off by having to cross the really far east (romford etc) so a set route is a good thing.

  • UP the River Lea is a good run out
Waltham Abbey or bit further to Broxbourne.... Pukka Boozer....The Crown
    headed out that way yesterday....

Or Regents Canal round to Paddington not a bad trip out.

  • Dumb question: you take regents canal to the tunnel. Get off. Can you just get back on the other side can go to Paddington?

  • Yes, it begins again halfway down Copenhagen St,

  • Sweet. I can now get from Hackney Wick to Paddington (to catch the train to Oxford) much more slowly, but much less stressfully.

Any canal commuters here? I have to be up in Oxford for 9 every day for a week in two weeks. Will the canal be a viable option, or will it be jammed?

  • I used to commute as far as Lisson Grove. It got irritating after loads of barriers got installed across the path usually just at the point where you really needed to pick up speed to get over a bridge or something.

I prefer the road to be honest

  • Can't stand riding to Paddington. New ride is Richmond Road to Essex Road to Upper St to Pentonville to Euston to Paddington. Awful ride. Can't think of a much better way to do it.

Also, only have the polo bike road worthy right now. That route + a 28:18 gear is even worse.

  • The canal south will take you down to Limehouse then along the Thames Path, but it keeps disappearing which can be a bit annoying.

I can do Kings cross in 12-15 minutes down the canal (from london fields) when its quiet in the morning but i get off at Angel then go straight down pentonville road. Never done paddington but probably only 10 mins further down the euston rd....

How did you get from Herne Hill to Richmond.. all routes ive tried aren't ideal?

Main road down to Wandsworth then down to the thames path and along past putney to barnes then cut up to the roehampton past the priory and tennis centre. Its a wee bit of a long way round but quite quiet. Takes a little bit of experimentation to get the route from the river to the park right but its relaively straight forward.

TBH during the day going straight along the main road (A205) after Wandsworth is not actually too bad as there are cyclelanes and wide roads most of the way.

  • Hi Omar, where are you in the E numbers?

The main routes out to Esssex are via Epping or Chigwell. The Epping way is the fixed friendly one. Start @ Whipps X roundabout for either of them

I did promise to do the Joy of Essex ride again; let me see when I ve a weekend free ...
