There might be a reason why people riding road bikes for long distances wear lycra. Lycra is comfortable, helps you maintain correct temperature etc.
Loose clothing will trap heat in and stop you cooling off.
I'd suggest you would actually feel more of a twat suffering in alternative clothing for reasons of vanity. As a middle aged man my physique should not be covered by fraction of a mm of stretchy fabric by all rules of sartorial taste. However for practicality I would not do anything else.
