I don't get the problem. The only thing I need pagination for is referencing. If I'm reading something that I won't be referencing, the bar is fine to figure out how far into a book you are. If you wanted to, you could work out a rough estimate of how many "pages" are left by seeing how many page-flips it takes to move up 1%.
In any case, page numbers are better. Not all ebooks have them yet, though.
