These Rims are my favourite rims in the whole world! Love them. Have a similar pair- but Zues copy record hubs- they are pretty bomb proof and lovely looking.

It's going to hurt to let these wheels go, but I already have too much good stuff to off load that cost me good money...

Pete Matthews wheels....Top Man

• #9
Nice hubs

The front hub is a 36 hole hub on a 24 hole rim
For the love of God, why?
-
• #11
^ YEAH, why? I'm curious, can any one explain if lacing 36 hole hub on a 24 hole rim is better, the same, or worse than conventional styles?? uh...FANTASTIC WHEELS

It's worse. The flange is weaker thanks to the extra holes. The necessity of using higher tension for lower spoke counts to achieve the same level of stability in the wheel combined with the lower number of spokes should place the same hoop stress on the flange as the higher number of lower tension spokes, so overall it's not critical, but it does make the build a PITA as the spoke lengths come out weird due to the flange holes being out of phase with the rim holes. The 24h C-Record hubs were a normal stock item when those wheels were built so it certainly looks like an odd choice. I could see more justification in using a 24h rear rim on a 32h hub with a 2:1 lacing, although my 24h rear on an even less stiff CX18 rim held up fine without any more fancy trickery than putting plain guage spokes in the drive side.

These wheels were built by Pete Matthews and you seem to paint a bad view on my wheels. Without stating the obvious the front wheel doesn't take as much pressure as the rear and although what you write is true to state 'It's worse' is bit strong in my opinion.
Also like to state that I don't think Pete Matthews would have built wheels like these to give himself a bad name as he is regarded as one of the finest wheel builders in England. Maybe you are a better wheel builder than Pete Matthews, mdcc tester?

Any idea who makes his rims?
-
• #16
No idea Dwayne, but only know they were made in Italy. I bought them from someone just over two years ago. Excellent rims... very strong... certainly support a big American like you! Lololol!

• #17
Thank you for explaining! But it does beg the question: for the love of god why?

... Excellent rims... very strong...
I've got a pair of Pianni rims which are a cross between Omega Vs and Mach2CDs.
Always wondered about the origins.

Yes, but say they look very similar Campagnolo lambda silver rims...

Yes, he's a highly reputed wheel builder, but we'd really all like to hear why they were built this way when the 24h hub was in the catalogue. Maybe they were a rush job for somebody who couldn't wait for the 24h to arrive in stock. I'm not trying to piss on your sale, and the price seems fair even though they are built funny. Given the builder and the fact that 24 into 36 isn't substantially detrimental to the strength of a wheel, there's no reason for anybody to avoid them on anything other than aesthetic grounds.

All you say is true, but I bought them from someone else and have never been used. Probably perfect for that gentle Sunday ride... Or could be used everyday and was also told that the chances are they will never need truing. regards c_c
