Track wheelset conundrum

Posted on
  • I have a track build coming along and have come to a head scratcher on a wheelset, This is the frame, I have a black saddle, stem and cranks, so want a black wheelset.

I figure that to go with the frame they need to be deep section, but I don't want to have naff rims, i.e. velocity V's, doddicis, H+SONS etc..

Any ideas of a good rim-hub combo? The rims have to come in black and ideally aren't machined. The hub doesn't have to be black though.

Budget is around £200 for hubs and rims, as I have access to free spokes.

Ideally the set will be light, relatively durable and atleast 30mm deep.

    Oh and Clincher

    Cheers

  • Powder coat some CXP30's, on-one hubs? You could do that for £100 with some luck on eBay.

  • Tubs or clincher?

  • would ideally like something slightly more upmarket then CXP30's and on-one hubs. Oh and Clinchers.

  • colour co-ordinating your track bike doesn't make you any faster at the track.

  • colour co-ordination only makes you faster on the Dalston - Hoxton commute.

  • you can get a second hand mavic ellipse wheel set for under £200 easy.

  • Hah, yeah yeah I know, but nothing wrong with a little indulgence...

  • I'd second hoop's Mavic Ellipse recommendation. They'd be ideal.

  • You don't often see them on ebay, but will have a look for them.

  • Kin Lin xr-300 are what I'm aiming for my new track wheels.
They are light and 30mmm deep, people also say theyare strong. They also sell under some brand names (Halo mercury and IRD cadence aero?)

  • Tap up Varno on here.....

  • Yeah I was looking into Kinlin Rims, I was leaning towards the xr-380 though. although they are not easy to get hold of and are machined.

I don't really fancy Novatec hubs, had them break after 9 months light use before, also don't like the weinmann rims he stocks

  • How about those Chinese carbon deep sections. You can get the clincher ones for 60quid plus postage. think it works out at 80 all in. 32 rear 28 front something like that? then either 2 track hubs or road hub front, track rear?

ha! you have become much, much worse than me.

You know I was thinking about that, didn't SmallFury get some for his BMC build? anyone know how he went about it? and complaints etc?

    was thinking the same

  • Him and Dovles (50mm tubs), have used them, they seem to have got on fine. see current projects...

Immitation is the greatest form of flattery....

The cnc labeled rims also seem to be kinlins! However I'm amazed you found another german website that sells kin lin rims that I couldn't find...
