to the OP - for one bike, a stand that holds it vertically takes up less space in terms of other furniture. we have something like that 2 bike silver thing^^ but in wood. it works well, and adjusts to heigt of room.
aesthetically i have seen some nice single bike ones that double as a shelf on top. presumably to keep a copy of Zinn!
