Frames similar to a Surly Steamroller

  • hey guy. As above, im really tempted to get a charge scissor, but to be honest I dont do any tricks and I'd just be using for an every day commuter. The real appeal of this frame is it just looks soid, I love just milling through stuff when im cycling and having the feel of a sturdy bombproof bike, however I wouldn't be using it for tricks at all really, i'd even be using a front break. Is it a crime to just use a scissor as a super awesome brute commuter, interested to here people opinion, cheers

  • All City Big Block?

  • yeah they look really nice, don't know if could dish out 566 dollors for it w/o the shipping, that'd be like 666 dollors, so like 450 euro, couldn't find a european supplier either

  • ISON distribution do them in the UK, need to go through a shop though

  • thanks mate, i'll defo be giving this some serious thought, looks really nice. I'm hopefully gonna try stay under 300 GBP. But if it comes to it I could stretch

  • For ~£350 you could get a complete Fuji Track. Spend the extra on new wheels and crankset, and you're golden (and have spares).

  • Why not consider a Genesis Day One? Frame is good, some other good stuff, wheels could do with being replaced. But its a good all rounder.

  • Not really comparable as the Day One is a (singlespeed) cross bike with weird rear spacing, poor paint and cantis.
    I've had two, never again.
I already had/have a Cross Check and was babying it but still don't know why I got the Day Ones other than they were ridiculously cheap via the staff purchase scheme for bike shop staff and I was messing with winter commute bike ideas. Have a Steamroller now and it's perfect. Still interested in getting a Big Block though, that was my second choice when I got the 'roller.

  • yeah, i might just stick with the roller nothing really seems to compare

  • major reasons to go roller for me were tire clearance and classic look with horizontal toptube. I dont think theres another frame that delivers both. Trick frames have clearances but they also have high front end and sloping long geo.

  • All City Big Block?

from a distance they look nicer, but the Surly is better built. welds on the all city don't seem all that clean, and the dropouts don't mesh nicely with the stays.

    surly wins at this game.

My brother rides a Steamroller as a rainy day bike and I ride a Mark V. Those are really the only two bikes i'd consider in this category.

I prefer the Mark V because it's a bit lighter and you can easily drill the dropouts to accept fenders directly.

If you want to buy a lot of parts for the bike, this may be worth your attention... considering you get a frame made by waterford and 20% off the parts. It won't be as pretty as a true Waterford, but it'll be quality.

  • those Milwaukee's are very nice. I was considering buying one but bringing it back to the UK was going to be a faff. Still, in person they are lovely. I was in Ben's cycles last year and they had a few built up, some in a more HHSB style, some more subtle and they all looked very good.

saying that, I am a huge fan of steamrollers, you know you can't go wrong.

  • bump, title changed really interested in a scissor to solve this conundrum, but not sure if its a crime to not use it for tricks

  • PiQue on the forum has one for sale I think... Might wanna drop him a PM
