Urgent HTFU or Don't ride needed!

  • Morning All

I'm supposed to be heading out for a century in about an hour.

As some of you may know, I had a run in with a van yesterday.

I've woken up with some soft tissue swelling on my left ankle. It hurts to walk but not to pedal.

I know what common sense is telling me but I'm too determined.

I shouldn't be considering going out and riding a ton should I?

Sorry for what sounds like an idiotic question...this is how my brains works unfortunately! Once I have a ride in my crosshairs, its hard for me to step down.

    D

  • Ignore me. I've managed to cool my boots and give up on today.

Man its hard for me to talk myself out of something. It takes so much effort to get psyched, it always backfires!

  • Get coffee and ibuprofen and MTFU!!!

  • This is weird...I had a double post, delete one and then the other has gone too.

Just saaid that Ibuprofen hasn't taken the swelling or pain away so I'm going to take the coffee advice and call it a day.

  • But cheers anyway M :)

  • I think you made the right decision.

On a similar note.. About 2 hours before I rode the Dunwich Dynamo a couple of years ago I got hit by a 4x4. Luckily it looked spectacular but did little damage. A few grazes and a little bruising on my side but nothing serious like a swollen ankle. If I don't explain that though, it could sounds like I'm a hard bastard.

  • rest, ice, compression elevation

    you can ride another day

  • Stonehedge, I love your panic questions!

Hope you're ok after your collision, there's no shame in taking a rest, you can smash those miles another day.

  • Ride another day. I think you are experiencing a little day after shock from your collision. That is normal.

  • Spend the day looking at lolcats. View it as an unexpected treat.

Hopefully the van is broken down on the Welsh end of the M4 with no recovery service and a leaky cab roof.

  • Shinigami: I am quite jumpy after yesterday...I really look forward to rides to relax. I regret the use of the word urgent now. Was just building up today to be an awesome relaxer after a tough few weeks and yesterday didn't help things.

Stupidly, I decided to test myself and went out for a quick spinny (94rpm) 22mi and am now happy that I made the right decision not to ride to woodbridge. The ankle is not that painful at all but I'm certain I would have been feeling it in the second 50.

On the plus side Senor Garmin has given me some pleasing figures (for me) for a gentlish Saturday morning spin in central London.

    Overall
    Time:01:20:27 Distance:22.55 mi Elevation Gain:377 ft

    Timing
Time:01:20:27 Moving Time:01:17:58 Elapsed Time:01:31:26 Avg Speed:16.8 mph Avg Moving Speed:17.4 mph Max Speed:28.5 mph

Thanks for tolerating my stupid question. I can now feel I have achieved something today but can also rest and give my ankle a chance.

If ankle is fine, there always next weekend.

  • Why was Woodbridge your aim? I live just down the road.

  • Ride another day..

  • My Mum and Dad live just outside...I ride around there often. I'll be up there next weekend with a bit of luck...

I mainly love it because it is flat although I learned not to take it for granted when I experienced the full fury of the sleet, hail and wind coming in from the sea about a month ago...that was a character building few days of riding!

  • Nice one.. I'm in Wickham Market.

The riding is good, plenty of back roads to put in some miles without seeing a car. Would offer to join you for a ride but I'll be in Dublin next weekend.

  • My parents are in Eyke...virtually neighbours by local standards!

I managed a 50 miler a while back and only saw 12 cars. Weekdays mid morning seem to be the best time from my experience.

In the winter some of the smaller roads can be VERY muddy and up near High Road (Iken) there are lots of flint splinters on the roads so I tend to get punctures now and then up there.

Just had another look at my Garmin data from this morning. Definitely something not right with me today...think I must have some delayed shock. My avg HR was up near 160 mark for the whole ride this morning...a tad high for that pace at current fitness.

  • Ok, just seen the news in Japan. Even more embarrassed to have used the word urgent in the thread title now. Wow.

  • It was that pesky Godzirra again.
