  • Did he ask what it was worth to him or did he ask what it was worth?

It's always worth pointing out to people that ask these questions that they need to check the size.

Sorry for my pettiness, but there is such a thing as 'market value', which is what people normally mean when they ask 'what is something worth'. Market value is a fair price which is what you could reasonably expect to sell something for give or take 5 or 10%. .... reasonable question.

    Yes it is reasonable.

But a search of google to find out the grade of the tubing, and groupset, followed by looking at the finished listings in ebay would have given him the answer... probably. Plus if the seller's his friend he is in a better position to make a judgement on the condition of the bike.

The problem is, that we all know that older stuff has fluctuating demand. There is more than a 5-10% margin. No one wants to buy 2nd alu frames, so they're not worth much any more.

2 years ago, before bike brands started putting trackends on their bikes, any converatable lugged steel road frame was worth at least £70 and somewhere above £120 if it was 531 and in a good colour. If you had a steel bike with track ends, then you could ask any stupid number. Now you can't (thank God).

I predict a backlash and a sudden dearth of vintage stuff, now lots of people are bored of cycling or have realised that they'd rather go for modern components.

I still stand by my £350 valuation.
