I'll vote for Paraffin too! by far the cheapest and very effective, though you'll stink for days if it gets on your boots!

Lighter fuel is good for removing muck from chains and conveniently sold by every corner shop in the land.

i find the mr muscle lime& vinegar wipes brilliant for bike cleaning duties.

serious hardcore nasty ass solvent sessions shouldn't be needed all that often! depends entirely on what lube, how applied and how much you are using, i.e spare lube = dirt sticks to it and then turns to black gunk = bad
